Tutor Jobs Overview

Tutors provide instruction and support to help students improve their academic performance and achieve their goals. They may work with young people or adults, delivering one-to-one sessions and group lessons. In addition to excellent communication skills, tutoring jobs require a confident and enthusiastic personality, expert knowledge in the chosen subject matter, a flexible approach to teaching, and the ability to cater to different learning styles. The tasks of a tutor include delivering lessons, carrying out student assessments, creating individual action plans, helping with revision and exam preparation techniques, and writing progress reports. Many tutors are self-employed and work from home. Frequent travel and evening or weekend work is required for most self-employed tutoring positions.

Candidates applying to a tutoring job based at a school will need to have Qualified Teacher Status or a PGCE in the subject matter they want to teach. Having a DBS check is also required. Other teaching qualifications that can be useful include a Certificate in Education or an accredited Initial Teacher Training qualification. A Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is useful for those interested in going into adult or further education. Tutors who teach online could benefit from taking a Learning to Teach Online course. Most teaching courses also require undertaking supervised teaching practice.
