Trading Standards Jobs Overview

Trading standards officers are responsible for ensuring that businesses of all kinds abide by consumer protection laws and operate within a fair and legal trading environment. Jobs in trading standards involve both routine monitoring of businesses, for example checking that weighing scales used in retail are accurate, and investigating complaints made against specific traders. The job requires a capacity to understand sometimes technical legislation, an ability to communicate clearly and patiently with people of all backgrounds, and the confidence to be assertive but fair. The job often involves field visits to inspect local businesses, and can require the preparation and presentation of legal evidence if a case goes to prosecution.

Trading Standards Jobs Education Requirements

Jobs in trading standards can be secured through two routes. Entry as a trainee trading standards officer requires a minimum of five GCSEs grades A-C, although some local authorities will require A-levels. Alternatively, a degree in any subject could be enough to go straight into qualified status, although if the degree is not in a related field such as consumer law, extra professional qualifications may be necessary. These can usually be studied for on the job.

Trading Standards Jobs Market

Most jobs in trading standards are public sector jobs, usually for a local authority, although for experienced trading standards officers there are also positions available in private companies, working to ensure that they are compliant with all relevant laws. These private jobs tend to have significantly better pay, and are suited for those with extensive practical knowledge and a strong background in the field.
