Develop enhanced skills and maintain CPD through self-directed learning, clinical supervision, mentorship and structured training sessions with physiotherapy colleagues and the interdisciplinary team
Be responsible for the development, and clinical training of physiotherapy students, therapy technicians, rehabilitation assistants and peers

We work in conjunction with York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Humber Coast and Vale STP, to deliver high quality intensive neurological rehabilitation, physical, cognitive, functional and vocational assessments, behavioural management, and complex disability assessments for patients above the age of 18.
We support patients with acquired brain injury, traumatic brain injury, severe neurological conditions, complex stroke and spinal cord injury. We can undertake SMART assessments for patients in Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDoC) and create bespoke treatment plans.

Job summary:
The post-holder will provide specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment for an adult group with complex, acquired neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and neurodegenerative diseases. The ability to apply comprehensive physical assessment and treatment skills that complement working in neurological rehabilitation is required
The post-holder
- Will have a keen interest in developing their neurological rehabilitation skill and competency
- Will develop the skills to practice as an autonomous practitioner and as part as a wider interdisciplinary team

Clinical Responsibility:
To develop a good knowledge of acquired brain injury, including stroke and head injury and application to physical skills including understanding the clinical reasoning of the use of equipment, technology and adaptations in the physical and social environment to maximise independence
To manage and prioritise own neurological clinical caseload with guidance and support from the team to organise the work efficiently in regard to clinical priorities and use of time
To undertake the comprehensive assessment and accurate diagnosis of patients, including those with a complex presentation and use investigative, analytical and clinical reasoning skills with guidance and support from the team
To evaluate treatment and use reflective practice within supervision to improve patient care and modify as required
To work with patients on their goals using functional and impairment based treatment. This includes being motivated to work with patients with complex physical impairments with support and guidance from the team
To formulate individualised treatment programmes, utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options. To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes as required, including consideration of discharge from the physiotherapy team at the appropriate time
To develop rehabilitation support plans to inform rehabilitation staff of how to continue the patients rehabilitation treatment throughout the 24 hour period
Along with colleagues in the MDT, to undertake environmental risk assessment with regard to the patients home environment, and use of the physio gym. To promote a positive approach to risk management to facilitate retention of patient independence and well-being
To effectively communicate, using verbal feedback and formal written reports, the outcomes of assessment and recommendations, and the therapeutic needs of the patient, to the patient, carers, and other relevant external professionals, to ensure continuity of care
To have knowledge of available equipment, therapy and rehabilitation aids, wheelchairs and manual handling equipment to best support patients in a neurological rehabilitation centre
To take responsibility for the appropriate selection, issue and education regarding the safe use of equipment to patients, following a comprehensive assessment, including moving and handling equipment or the appropriate walking aid to promote independent safe mobility in a variety of environments
To ensure staff and family members are competent and confident in use of equipment, as appropriate
With support initially, to participate in specialist clinics as required for patients needs e.g. orthotics clinics; ensuring the follow up of recommendations and advice for the multidisciplinary team
To take an active role in case conference meetings and multi-disciplinary meetings as appropriate and act as key therapist when appropriate
To supervise, educate and assess the performance of therapy technicians and rehabilitation assistants to ensure the standards of practice of the centre are met
As practice placement educator, to supervise, educate and assess the performance of occupational therapy students. This would be to a graduate standard and involve working with a senior Occupational Therapist and university staff
To undertake evidence-based departmental audit and research projects, in association with the Clinical Lead physiotherapist, to further clinical practice skills
To carry out other duties deemed necessary by the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist and Head of Therapies to ensure adequate provision of service
Training responsibilities:
To be committed to continuous professional development, monitoring and developing own performance to maintain a high standard and to maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio as required by the directorate
Be clinically competent in all areas of practice relevant to the post
Complete mandatory training as determined by the organisations policy
Complete relevant competencies for the role

We receive input from other professions allied to medicine, including dietetics, orthotics, podiatry, wheelchair services and Music Therapy.
