The Rheumatology Department at STH are currently recruiting for two whole-time Consultant Rheumatologists to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Rheumatology Service.

The successful candidate will work flexibly and co-operatively with other members of the team in order to provide a high quality, comprehensive service within this teaching hospital environment. To minimise travel between sites the job plan has been designed to ensure that wherever possible the successful candidate will be based at one site each day.

We are also looking to develop our service and so having a special interest that complements the department would be welcome, and in particular an interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound would be encouraged. We are looking to continue our work as a Specialised Rheumatology centre. These posts will support the general rheumatology workload of the department with scope to develop a special interest.

About us

The Rheumatology team presently comprises 11 NHS consultants with a wide range of special interests. These are replacement posts and the appointees will take over the case load of the departing consultants. We have 2 specialist rheumatology registrars and 2 junior trainees (one GP trainee and one core medical trainee). Our department is supported by a team of dedicated nurses which includes our Matron, 4 clinical nurse specialists, 3 biologic nurse specialists, one lupus nurse specialist and a senior sister who manages the remainder of our nursing team, who rotate between our in and outpatient facilities.

The department has an extensive training programme with regular staff seminars, and a commitment to exploring new and improved training methods. Staff members are encouraged to engage in further study.The department is equipped with Sysmex XN line analysers (with Interrliner, Tubesorter and SP10 slidemaker/stainer), Grifols Blood Grouping analysers, Sysmex CS5100 Coagulation analysers and the Apex LIMS. The specialist sections of Haematology and Coagulation are centralised on the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and staff will have an opportunity to rotate into these departments for supported training and continual professional development (CPD). These include the Haemolysis/Haemoglobinopathy laboratory, Cell Markers laboratory (this section acts as the hub for and administers a regional Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS)) and the Coagulation department offering some of the most comprehensive services in the country. All sections of the department are ISO15189 compliant as assessed by UKAS.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision.

Work in line with all prescribed Standard Operating Procedures and Policies as directed and be involved in the review process.

Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.

Contribute to ensuring that stock levels are maintained.

Work in a safe manner in accordance with Service, Directorate and Trust Health and Safety Policies

Assist in monitoring quality standards, perform audit as directed in line with Service needs.

Assist with aspects of Health and Safety monitoring and Risk Assessments.

Deliver appropriate Staff training as directed by senior BMS.

Supervise work of MLAs, trainees and less experienced BMS staff as directed by senior BMS colleagues.

To become mentor to trainee and less experienced BMS staff as directed by senior colleagues/laboratory management.

Take responsibility for own personal development and training.

Reporting results using the laboratory computer system in line with procedures authorised by the laboratory management team/head of department.

Contribute to the delivery of training and the demonstration or working procedures to less experienced staff as directed by senior BMS.

Assist in planned Research and Development.

Take professional responsibility and take a lead responsibility for equipment maintenance and monitoring in line with departmental procedures as directed by senior colleagues.

Contribute to technical/scientific discussions on service/policy development.

Ensure that test results are accurate and valid prior to release to the Laboratory Information Management System.

Concentrate for extended periods of time whilst performing the analysis and in order to avoid transcription errors when transferring data onto the Laboratory Information Management System.

Demonstrate a positive flexible attitude to the work of the Service, Members of the Service Team and Service Users.

To work to the defined quality standards for all aspects of the Service, e.g. Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) and all the standards this encompasses

Contribute to the calibration, quality control and routine operation of automated haematology analysers including ESR instrumentation.

Perform a variety of highly complex investigations including:

Validation and authorisation of routine automated haematology using laboratory and third party computer systems.

Analysis of Abnormal Haemoglobinopathies, and HbA1c using HPLC system.

Investigation of a range of hereditary red cell defects.

Correct processing of abnormal haematinic assays.

Routine Blood Transfusion serology using blood grouping instrumentation.

Issue of blood and blood products in compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.

Cellular Immunology investigations using flow cytometry.

To initiate telephone calls and respond to telephone enquiries by undertaking retrieval of results from the laboratory computer system and to communicate authorised results to appropriate requestor in line with departmental procedures. This may include responding to telephone requests to amend patient demographics which would lead to the verbal re-issuing of reports that include derived values recalculated against set procedures, e.g. maternal screening results.

All biomedical scientist staff would be expected to participate in appropriate risk assessments, e.g. identifying hazards associated with a specific procedure.

Laboratory work involves standing for extended periods while performing complex analytical procedures on potentially highly infectious (e.g. samples containing HIV, Hepatitis and other blood borne viruses) and frequently repugnant samples which require a high level of concentration.

Regular exposure to hazardous chemicals which must be handled in line with control of substances hazardous to health and risk assessment guidelines.

Must be able to concentrate for extended periods of time whilst performing the analysis and in order to avoid transcription errors when transferring data onto the laboratory information management system.

There is a requirement to transfer reagents/laboratory equipment between locations in the department. Where necessary this will involve the use of appropriate moving and handling equipment.

Works independently and may work alone during out of hours periods.

There is a frequent requirement for sitting in front of a VDU screen for long periods of time whilst retaining a high degree of concentration in spite of unscheduled interruptions.

Participate in the out of hours service arrangements as required by Laboratory Management.

Deputise for senior BMS for short periods of time due to staff shortages or as directed by laboratory management.
