What does the Ideal Candidate look like?

Minimum requirements?

We are currently seeking a Tax Associate to join our Corporate Tax team.

We are looking for an ambitious and self-motivated corporate tax associate to join our growing tax team.
 
The work that we do in the tax team is very varied and often complex. We work closely with other departments across the firm including the corporate, funds, finance, real estate, employment & pensions and litigation groups. We advise on the full range of taxes.
The role will involve transactional, advisory and structuring work across all of those areas.
This could typically include:
  • public and private M&A transactions;
  • group reorganisations and demergers;
  • real estate matters, including corporate real estate transactions and property fund structures such as JPUTs, REITs and PAIFs;
  • listed fund IPOs and secondary fund raisings;
  • private equity transactions;
  • corporate finance, leasing and asset finance; and
  • tax disputes work.

Given the breadth of the work that we do, we expect our tax lawyers to be able to advise confidently on all of the main direct taxes, VAT, SDLT and stamp duties. We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in expanding their knowledge of tax, who is willing to learn and who enjoys working collaboratively in a team environment to provide excellent service to our clients.

This is an opportunity for a qualified corporate or mixed tax professional to join one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful startups.

 

You’ll be part of a commercially-minded Finance team, being the first person in our newly created tax team, reporting to the Group Financial Controller. The remit of this role will be to ensure our tax affairs are transparently compliant and efficient, so that our mission is sustainable into the future. 

 

In this newly created global role, we are looking for an intelligent problem solver who is comfortable with both complex data and tax principles. If you are someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and prides themselves on implementing order and process in an otherwise unstructured environment, this could be the position for you.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the outsource the preparation of all corporate tax computations globally (e.g. UK, US & Lithuania). Elements of this may be taken in-house over time.
  • Act as an in-house advisor to both finance and business teams on a wide range of tax topics (e.g. budgeting, forecasting, planning, risks & controls and payroll).
  • Assist on ad hoc research and projects, including expansion into new countries and liaising with external advisors to ensure tax requirements are met.
  • Lead on a major transformation project from a Transfer Pricing and value-chain perspective; design & implementation of documentation and reporting with the help of advisors where necessary.
  • Lead on the evaluation of the global organisational structure; proposal of changes to mitigate risks to group tax position.
  • Manage outsourced R&D claims (e.g. facilitate technical interviews with advisors and engineers) and identify further opportunities for other claims and incentives.
  • Assist on M&A projects from a tax perspective.
  • Assist with audits/litigations; liaising with external consultants and local teams.
  • Support on VAT topics, ensuring compliance.
  • Preparation of IFRS year-end tax reporting and tax provisions for local statutory accounts and group reporting with the help of advisors where necessary.
  • Work closely with financial accounting and finance system teams for sources of data and information, including directly extracting information from our Finance system with a drive towards automation and innovation (e.g. making tax digital)

Requirements:

  • Degree in Law/Tax Law/Economics/Finance/equivalent
  • Practical experience in tax (c. 2-4 years in an accounting firm or in-house environment)
  • Experience in an international environment; knowledge of tax law/ways of working in various countries.
  • Independent self-starter with good communication skills (we are a global organisation with offices around the world so remote communication is key)

Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge

Bachelors degree or equivalent relevant experience (+ 5 years)
An accounting or bookkeeping qualification and membership. Ideally with experience in a broad range of industries.

Be able to communicate UK tax legislation so it can be turned into easy to use software working with our engineering, design and product managements teams. Ensuring they understand the impact on our end users.
Ensure UK tax legislative and regulatory accreditation and e-file recognition is achieved on released and supported products.
Act as primary source for information for all questions regarding UK tax regulatory and legislative rules. Embedded with the product team
Developing the skills to prepare written or verbal presentations to other business teams to communicate any of the above.
Task plans for his/her own work that are independent of but related to broader work-plans.
Taxes to be supported include VAT, CIS, Income tax for Self-Assessment.
