The primary purpose of the role is to maintain and improve the systems that have been developed and hosted for customers keeping them updated with latest releases, monitoring, investigating and resolving any reported issues. In addition, maintaining internal systems as required, including development and test environments for products and production environments for business systems. The Systems Administrator is expected to understand and maintain the highest levels of data security, and to ensure the business continuity plan is supported by the technology.
This role includes tasks that require the incumbent to be present at our Newbury office.
Daily tasks :
? remotely monitor the general health of customer systems developed and / or hosted, including use of the Nagios system;
? review Application, Application Server, Database and Operating System (Windows & Linux, Apache server, Payara) logs for issues;
? providing timely responses to supported customers on queries relating to systems administration;
? carry out regular remote administration such as maintaining / synchronising system properties;
? maintain backups for all customer and internal systems, manage offsite rotation of backup tapes;
? update internal administrative systems with status and time spent on jobs;
Regular (weekly or monthly) tasks :
? review automated alerts, vulnerability scans etc. provided by the data centre and take required action;
? test and apply software & security updates to test, training, production & DR environments as required;
? maintain all the necessary hardware, software, connectivity and documentation needed to support the business continuity plan;
? apply and monitor customer licence keys;
? certificate management;
? provide 'on-call' support out of normal working hours on a rota basis (typically one week in 4, but subject to change)
Ad hoc tasks :
? set up new virtual machines (Windows / Linux);
? install new technologies and tools to support new development;
? implement new customer systems (either remotely or on-site);
? carry out stress testing on selected servers;
? maintain / create clear and accurate internal documentation for all system administration tasks;
? maintain in-house systems & IT infrastructure including Windows/Linux based virtual machines, network routers and VPNs;
? maintain accurate and secure DNS and Firewalls;
? carry out major system upgrades;recommend and implement changes to systems and processes for continuous improvement to our services;

Essential Skills


With an estate of around 50 servers, plus PCs and Chromeboxes to monitor and maintain, the emphasis is on high levels of organisation, quality and thoroughness.
The successful candidate is likely to have achieved a higher level qualification in IT Systems Management, and will possess good English and Maths skills.
It is essential to demonstrate a broad technical experience of managing networks and server environments and supporting software. This should include several (not all!) of the following:
? Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019
? VLANs
? Hypervisors
? Active Directory
? Firewall and router administration (ideally Meraki)
? Linux administration (ideally Debian)
? Application server environments such as Apache, Glassfish and Payara
? Scripting experience (Python, Ansible playbook, Bash or Perl)
? Nagios monitoring
? Database server environments such as Oracle, PostgreSQL and SQLite;
? Data management environments such as Oracle's SQL Developer and Postgres' pgAdmin;
We are not looking for the 'finished article' and are keen to find someone who has much of what we are looking for. Training can be provided where necessary.

This role includes tasks that require the incumbent to be present at our Newbury office.

Daily tasks :
? remotely monitor the general health of customer systems developed and / or hosted, including use of the Nagios system;
? review Application, Application Server, Database and Operating System (Windows & Linux, Apache server, Payara) logs for issues;
? providing timely responses to supported customers on queries relating to systems administration;
? carry out regular remote administration such as maintaining / synchronising system properties;
? maintain backups for all customer and internal systems, manage offsite rotation of backup tapes;
? update internal administrative systems with status and time spent on jobs;

Regular (weekly or monthly) tasks :
? review automated alerts, vulnerability scans etc. provided by the data centre and take required action;
? test and apply software & security updates to test, training, production & DR environments as required;
? maintain all the necessary hardware, software, connectivity and documentation needed to support the business continuity plan;
? apply and monitor customer licence keys;
? certificate management;
? provide 'on-call' support out of normal working hours on a rota basis (typically one week in 4, but subject to change)

Ad hoc tasks :
? set up new virtual machines (Windows / Linux);
? install new technologies and tools to support new development;
? implement new customer systems (either remotely or on-site);
? carry out stress testing on selected servers;
? maintain / create clear and accurate internal documentation for all system administration tasks;
? maintain in-house systems & IT infrastructure including Windows/Linux based virtual machines, network routers and VPNs;
? maintain accurate and secure DNS and Firewalls;
? carry out major system upgrades;recommend and implement changes to systems and processes for continuous improvement to our services;

Essential Skills


With an estate of around 50 servers, plus PCs and Chromeboxes to monitor and maintain, the emphasis is on high levels of organisation, quality and thoroughness.

The successful candidate is likely to have achieved a higher level qualification in IT Systems Management, and will possess good English and Maths skills.

It is essential to demonstrate a broad technical experience of managing networks and server environments and supporting software. This should include several (not all!) of the following:
? Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019
? VLANs
? Hypervisors
? Active Directory
? Firewall and router administration (ideally Meraki)
? Linux administration (ideally Debian)
? Application server environments such as Apache, Glassfish and Payara
? Scripting experience (Python, Ansible playbook, Bash or Perl)
? Nagios monitoring
? Database server environments such as Oracle, PostgreSQL and SQLite;
? Data management environments such as Oracle's SQL Developer and Postgres' pgAdmin;

We are not looking for the 'finished article' and are keen to find someone who has much of what we are looking for. Training can be provided where necessary.
