Islington Additional Needs and Disability Service provides a multi-agency team approach to working with babies, children and young people who present with additional needs and complex disabilities. This post will be based primarily within the Special Schools Team at the Bridge School providing speech & language therapy & autism specific interventions at targeted and specialist levels for children and young people enrolled at the school. The pupils at The Bridge have a range of needs including a diagnosis of autism and /or severe learning difficulties. There is a dedicated MDT working within the Special Schools Team and there are excellent opportunities for joint work with other professionals and outside agencies.

The post holder will work in the multidisciplinary and multi-agency environment including working with, specialist teachers, social workers, SLTs, therapy assistants, psychologists, dieticians, paediatricians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other professionals.
The post holder is an autonomous practitioner and is responsible for organising and managing a defined caseload of children and young people (CYP). S/he is responsible for delivering a comprehensive and highly specialist service to CYP who have special and complex needs that may include autism, downs syndrome , complex learning difficulties, dysphagia and social and emotional behaviour difficulties. Some CYP use AAC including PECS, Makaton signing, paper based and speech generating communication aids. Intervention includes assessment, differential diagnosis and therapy for individual children or groups of children and working with the MDT to provide support to parents and professionals. The post holder will devise and provide individualised care plans that are evaluated via outcome measures. S/he will employ specialist communication strategies used with the client group as appropriate. S/he will have a detailed knowledge of the National Curriculum in order to ensure that the childs treatment programme is dovetailed with the curriculum in the childs educational environment.S/he will have a detailed knowledge of the Preparing for Adulthood framework in order to ensure that CYP are supported effectively throughout transition and into adulthood. S/he will liaise with educational colleagues in order to undertake joint planning of IEP targets, production of annual reports and staff training.
The post holder will take a lead on a clinical speciality within the team. S/he will provide clinical supervision and support to less experienced colleagues both within the team and the wider service; this will include the provision of second opinions.
S/he will represent the Speech and Language Therapy Service at multi disciplinary / multi agency meetings as necessary.
The post holder will have excellent communication skills and the ability to empathise in order to support and counsel parents to accept the implications of their childs special needs. S/he will be able to communicate complex information effectively taking into account the barriers to communication presented by the diverse caseload. S/he will be skilled in working in and liaising within a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment. The clinicians level of high level of expertise in the field will ensure that s/he can reassure and instil confidence in clients, carers and other professionals. S/he will demonstrate good negotiation skills in working with other team members, parents/carers or other professionals. S/he will contribute to policy development and the development of clinical protocols
The post holder will be involved in developing and delivering training for school staff and parents. S/he will provide clinical education for more junior staff in the department. The post holder is required to participate in audit and research, initiate development of research proposals and participate in data collation.
