Social Work Jobs Overview
The role of a social worker is to provide support to vulnerable individuals and help them cope with limiting or disempowering situations. Due to the sensitive nature of the job, having the right personal qualities is very important when it comes to being successful in this career choice. Jobs in social work require patience, empathy, a positive and calm attitude, and being decisive but at the same time understanding of other people's needs. Problem solving and negotiation skills are also key, as social workers will often act as intermediaries between their clients and institutions. Candidates should also have knowledge of relevant legislation with regards to housing, family law, health and social care. Daily tasks include carrying out assessments and interviews, making recommendations, directing clients to the best sources of help and support, writing reports, and giving evidence in cases that go to court.
Social Work Jobs Education Requirements
To apply for jobs in social work, candidates will need a degree in this discipline (undergraduate or post-graduate) that has been approved by the industry's regulatory bodies: the Health & Care Professions Council, the Scottish Social Services Council, the Care Council for Wales, or the Northern Ireland Social Care Council. There are several specialisms to choose from, such as working with children, with individuals affected by substance dependency, with teenagers, with people with physical disabilities or mental disorders, and with older individuals. Social workers must have a clean DBS check.
