Responsibilities

Pavement Engineering

Field Service Engineer 

The Field Service Engineer (FSE) will be responsible for meeting the daily service maintenance and repair needs of Sweepers equipment. Establish and maintain proper business relationships with customers and peers as well as performing necessary administrative duties as required.


Field Service Engineers are required to undertake the following duties and responsibilities in a safe, reliable and courteous manner:


  • Basic troubleshooting, installation, maintenance and repair, measuring the performance of mechanical components, devices and engines and other company equipment and reporting verbally or in writing regarding their condition
  • Fault diagnosis, repair and routine maintenance of sweepers and other company equipment with minimal supervision, in a safe and economic manner, employing such skills and knowledge as are required at minimum cost to the company
  • Agreeing budgets, timescales and specifications with clients and managers


  • Ensuring that all routine maintenance or repair work is the subject of an accurate and timely written report including details of parts used and time taken on a work record card
  • Testing, evaluating, modifying and re-testing assets to ensure they are safe, reliable and efficient
  • Ensuring that all tools and equipment used during any such routine maintenance or repair work are maintained in a clean, tidy and safe condition
  • Managing repair parts and stock, ordering where necessary 
  • Operating a service van, where allocated, in strict accordance with the company vehicle policy and current road traffic legislation


Qualifications and Requirements 


  • Knowledge with mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering, mechatronics or engineering manufacturing science and technology.
  • Educated to a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering level or equivalent 
  • Knowledge of engines, gearboxes, hydraulics, electrics and braking systems

As a Field Service Engineer for our Survey & Laser department in West Bromwich, you will carry out service calls to the above-mentioned machines, in order to identify and repair any faults or system errors. This is, of course, a routine task for you, with your outstanding technical experience and skillset.

Your technical skills will come to the fore when you establish site controls, install GPS base stations, localise GPS machinery and finally carry out site checks using Leica Total Station and Leica GPS Survey equipment. As a subject matter expert, your knowledge and expertise will be regularly called upon, should operators and engineers need to be trained in the use of Leica Machine Control Equipment. You will certainly be undertaking diverse technical tasks in the role of Field Service Engineer in West Bromwich. You will always be mobile, visiting different places around the UK. Main Purpose of Job:
To provide design and technical advice in all relevant disciplines for construction purposes within the
projects.

Key Tasks:

  • Routine geotechnical and structure designs of guide walls, reaction piles for test piles, Dwall trench stability, temporary works for Dwall and pile cages (lifting points, bands, trapping beams…) including production of design deliverables for each design package (e.g., design report, design certificate, design risk assessments, management of CAD for design drawings)
  • Check reinforcement cage drawings produced by my clients CAD team or agency hired CAD resource. This includes reinforcement for bored piles, barrettes, secant walls, contiguous walls and diaphragm wall panels.
  • Provide design coordination between appointed cage supplier and my clients designer (i.e., check fabrication drawings against the design drawings and carry out cage inspection on site or at their yard).
  • Assist the production of design brief with site team when temporary works design is done by our client (e.g., piling platform and bentonite farm slabs).
  • Provide design support to site with change requests and NCRs.
  • Potential to carry out ground improvement design and coordination (soil nailing, deep soil mixing, jet grouting, etc.).

Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • Suitable previous job experience (2-5 years)
  • Sound technical knowledge of geotechnical, piling, Dwalling and general ground engineering and industry best practice.
  • Good working knowledge of structural and geotechnical software packages (Wallap, Adsec, Stabou…).
  • Ability to carry out the specific risks assessments on the design risk assessment report and list any residual risks on the appropriate drawings.
  • Proficient in Eurocodes, ICE SPERW 3rd edition, Execution of bored piling and Dwalling and any other relevant codes or standards.
  • Proficient in CDM regulation 2015.
  • Ability to demonstrate technical and practical skills such as being able to read, understand and implement drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Knowledge and experience to fully understand the assumed methods of construction and loading constraints.

Do have a detailed knowledge of highways drainage systems? Do you want to take a leading role maintaining a large network of assets? If so, this is your opportunity to be part of our dynamic team maintaining our highways drainage assets and managing highways flood risk in the borough.

This is a role in Telford & Wrekin Council’s Drainage & Flood Risk Team with responsibility for managing our highways drainage assets.  You will be working with contractors to ensure maintenance schedules are delivered and will be identifying capital improvement schemes to manage highways flood risk. We are halfway through an exercise to cleanse and collect data on all 33,000 gullies in the borough to inform a risk based maintenance responsibility so you will work closely with our Term Service Contractor to complete and implement this new strategy using systems like Confirm and Kaarbontech. You will have a strong customer focus and be able to work quickly and efficiently to solve problems and communicate solutions to internal and external parties.

We are looking for degree qualified candidates with demonstrable experience relating to drainage maintenance in a Local Authority setting. You will be responsible for all aspects of Highways Drainage Maintenance including strategy, scheduled and reactive maintenance as well as budget management, customer and contractor liaison. You will be able to use drainage software have experience working as a designer and supervisor for drainage schemes with experience in NEC3. You must be able to provide your own transport with insurance for business use to allow travel to sites and to respond to issues. You will work in a team of engineers and flood risk officers on a variety of tasks in the borough and will deliver a package of schemes as part of the Council’s 4 year investment programme to Protect, Care and Invest in our borough. You should be and able to work autonomously for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.

In return the suitable candidate will be offered a sating salary between £24,000 - £30,000 depending on experience.

  • Depending on experience the Design Engineer manage all aspects of the projects you undertake with internal structural engineers
  • Responsible for maintaining the design programme. Where this cannot be achieved, you will agree an appropriate course of action with the Technical Manager
  • Steel Frame - Loadbearing & Non-Loadbearing experience would be a distinct advantage
  • Minimum 12 months Tekla experience is required
