Security Cleared Jobs Overview

There are four types of clearance, all of which are set by the employer depending on the level required for the security cleared job:

  • Baseline (BPSS)
  • Security Check (SC)
  • Developed Vetting (DV)
  • Counter Terrorist (CTC)

Baseline is the lowest level; SC is for IT, healthcare, government, MOD and the private sector; DV clearance is for high-security positions within the Ministry of Defence, civil servants and defence contractors; while a CTC is required for police department jobs, as well as for legal and some government agency positions.

Security Cleared Jobs Education Requirements

Formal education requirements are only relevant to the particular security cleared job applied for, whereas in order to obtain security clearance in any of the above categories, it is necessary to undergo the following vetting process:

  • Verify UK residency for at least five years
  • Clear the Baseline Personnel Security Standard Check
  • Company/Departmental Records Check
  • Complete a Security Questionnaire
  • A Criminal Record Check
  • A Credit Reference Check
  • Security Service Check

These security check procedures will usually be carried out by the employer.

Security Cleared Jobs Market

Security cleared job categories include security consultancy, IT and cyber security, aerospace, telecommunications security jobs, government and armed forces. Check the job description carefully to ascertain the exact requirements. Most security clearances, whichever category, are normally transferable from one job to another; many employers prefer candidates who have already been cleared.

Security Cleared Jobs Salary Information

There is no definitive rule of thumb as to the amount of salary any specific security cleared job will offer as it depends greatly on the type of work involved. Security clearance should not necessarily be seen as a way to earn additional money, but as a way to obtain an exciting and rewarding job. As an example, however, according to the current job market, a SC/DV Cleared Project Manager could earn £350 per day whilst an SC/DV Cleared Service Architect could earn £400.
