Sales Assistant Jobs Overview

The retail sector is the UK's second biggest industry for employment, providing jobs for three million people in venues from corner shops to multi-national chains. Often people seeking a career in retail start as a sales assistant with a choice of working in a range of areas such as a supermarket, department store, fashion, jewellery, sport, music, books or health and beauty. Responsibilities differ depending if the shop specialises in a particular product, but, in general, basic tasks tend to be the same. They include:

  • Serving and advising customers
  • Taking payments
  • Keeping the shop stocked
  • Taking orders and arranging deliveries
  • Dealing with complaints and refunds

According to the UK Commission for Employment Skills, overall skills required for the job are set to increase, so the need for English and maths abilities is predicted to become more important. Also an increasing expansion into internet sales means those with good qualifications and ICT skills can better advance their career into more senior posts such as store supervisor jobs or assistant manager roles.
