Receptionist Jobs Overview

A receptionist is often the first point of contact for a company or organisation, and is ideal for someone with a bright and friendly manner, who enjoys dealing with a variety of people throughout the day, and who can be organised and able to think on their feet. The work is varied, covering areas from office administration and secretarial duties to hospitality and customer service roles within a typical day. In smaller companies, receptionists are also often expected to cover a variety of secondary roles from basic bookkeeping and cash handling to organising transport and travel arrangements for other employees. All this means that a flexible and positive approach to work is vital.

Receptionist Jobs Education Requirements

Although there are no formal educational requirements for receptionist jobs, most employers will want to see GCSEs or equivalent in English and maths, and some form of IT qualification or experience will be helpful. On-the-job training can lead to qualifications in specialised forms of reception work such as medical receptionist positions, and also lead to supervisory, training, and office administration roles.

Receptionist Jobs Market

Receptionist work is split fairly evenly between full time and part time positions, and this can make an ideal job for someone returning to work after starting a family. Depending on the organisation, shift work and rota work may also be available, and so flexibility in working hours can be an advantage. Although there is a wide range of receptionist work available, competition for openings can be high. In the wider secretarial sector, the Office for National Statistics reports that 94% of positions are filled by women, and the skill shortage is relatively low at 16% so qualifications and/or experience will be very useful in securing work.

Receptionist Jobs Salary Information

Salary ranges vary widely according to responsibilities and the size of the organisation, but as a rough guide earnings can range between £11,500 and £19,000 for a general receptionist.
