Project Management is a challenging and rewarding role. Project Managers take responsibility for business projects from planning to completion, and are required to monitor all phases of their project(s) and report back to senior management. Project Management jobs are found in all industries, including healthcare, IT, construction, engineering, and any sector where projects are undertaken. Although project scope, aims and methods may vary considerably, the principles of project management remain the same: the project manager must ensure that projects are completed successfully within budget, on time and according to business requirements.

A Project Manager needs a high level of literacy and numeracy, as well as business acumen, strong organisational skills, and leadership skills.

Project Manager Jobs Education Requirements

Generally, Project Managers will either have a degree in business or project management, or significant professional project management experience. Experience can be gained through supporting project managers by working in Project Support or Project Administration job roles. A PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments 2) qualification is advantageous, and ideal candidates will also possess practical experience of applying the principles of project management. Many employers will fund PRINCE2 training or other work-based project management courses.

Potential employers may require a qualification or experience in their specific industry. IT Project Management jobs, in particular, require strong IT skills.

According to the National Careers Service, 1.61m people are currently employed as Project Managers in the UK, and this figure is rising steadily. Project Managers may be employed within a business, public sector or charitable organisation, or may work for different clients through a consultancy firm or on a freelance basis.

Project Manager Jobs Salary Information

According to the National Careers Service, starting salaries for project managers are between £25,000 and £30,000 a year, rising to up to £50,000 a year. Skilled freelancers may earn considerably more.
