Randstad Engineering are recruiting for a Development Chemist on behalf of our client based in North Somerset.
The successful candidate will undertake development work at our clients Laboratory, including; process problem solving, beta and field trial support and product incident investigation both in the Laboratory and on customer's sites.
The position will be within the innovation, development and applications (IDA) group, interacting with an interdisciplinary environment of engineers and scientists.
The position will report to a senior development chemist or senior development engineer.
A degree of work-related travel is anticipated; there is an expectation that chemists support their developments in the field.
The Role:
  • Analytical chemistry skills including: instillation of test gases, leak checking of test equipment, analysis of gases using equipment including FTIR, mass spec, electrochemical cells, analysis and write up of data. Demonstrated ability to contribute to innovative technology development or product improvement.
  • Carry out risk assessments on prototype equipment or lab test rigs and to operate them safely.
  • Ability to interact with other members of the technical community at a detailed technical level.
  • Ability to transfer detailed technology requirements to an engineering group and ensure that the design intent is reflected in the resulting product designs.
  • An ability to describe technical subjects to a range of non-experts (eg. sales, marketing, engineering, management) and have the audience understand the basic concepts and benefits of technologies under development.

Skills and Experience:
  • The candidate will ideally have a minimum of a Chemistry or chemical Engineering degree or PhD, followed by between 1 - 3 years in analytical lab, gas chemistry lab or product development.
  • Graduates with suitable industrial placement experience will be considered. Other chemical or engineering backgrounds will be considered.

Required skills and experience:

•Previous experience in similar or relevant role would be highly desirable e.g. Facilities Maintenance, Property Maintenance, Property Repair, Construction Worker, Multi-Skilled Builder, Skilled Labourer, Cabin Fitter, engineer, fabricator welder.
•To have a good mix of general maintenance skills including the use of power tools
•You would need to have a willingness to learn; the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team; a flexible approach to work and working hours (including regular overtime).
•Certificates in MPBA or ECA, Abrasive Wheels, COSH, Manual handling would be beneficial to have but training will be given

Ideally you may hold an NVQ or equivalent in your specialism, a blue skilled worker CSCS card and a Health & Safety qualification, however full training will be provided to obtain these following the successful completion of a probationary period. Any experience of self-powered equipment / generators would be advantageous but not essential. This position would suit candidates from a property maintenance / property repair, Multi Trader, Handyman, Facilities maintenance, general builder, skilled labourer, or similar background.

A full driving licence is essential as this role involves lots of travelling to client sites across the region. There may also be a requirement of overnight stays on occasion.

On a daily basis, you will maintain ownership of faults and provide timely updates to both internal and external customers; ensuring faults are given the correct level of priority and meeting service level agreements. Key Responsibilities

  • Deal with incoming faults over the phone and via email.
  • Log incidents and faults on our service software and prioritising them in line with project procedures.
  • Liaise with customers/engineers and providing regular updates.
  • Maintain ownership of faults until resolution, ensuring all faults are progressed and cleared within SLA (escalating to 2nd/3rd line support where appropriate).

  • Undertake training in Costain’s technology products.
  • Various administrative tasks including collating reports, managing users and passwords, etc.

The role will be shift based; covering 8am until 6pm Monday to Friday and will require flexibility within this timeframe.

We have long term placement opportunities available for band 2 Healthcare Technical Officer/Lab Assistant available at Filton Blood Bank, specifically providing the following

  • Undertaking precise repetitive and routine tasks, carrying out manipulation of equipment and handling blood bags and blood samples/donations on a regular basis
  • Handling blood bags and a range of equipment
  • Manually handling equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
  • You must have had HEP B Vaccinations to do this role, as you will be working with Blood Products

About the Department

SSE Enterprise Contracting is one of the UK's largest Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) contractors with a product/service portfolio ranging from M&E LV, HV, Instrumentation, Street Lighting, Facilities Management through to Combined Heat and Power solutions.

What is the Role?

The key purpose of this position will be to support the Regional Commercial Manager and Team in providing commercial support within the region for M&E works. You’ll provide end to end commercial support, including developing the commercial strategy for specific projects or contracts by maintaining and maximising profitability and minimising risk. You’ll also support regional stakeholders on general commercial matters in order to reduce risk across the business.
Main responsibilities for this role will include :

- Understanding and negotiating contract terms for projects and mitigating risks these may place upon SSE prior to any agreement.

- Maintaining dialogue with relevant operational management to have a continual understanding as to contract administration status of specified projects,

- Ensuring that the internal reports of the projects are accurate in respect of risk, costs incurred, projection of costs to spend, contingency and liabilities, variations, claims, Sub-Contract management, sales declared and consequently profit declared.

- Pre-Contract support – review and negotiate Terms & Conditions, assisting with Tenders, Bids and negotiations to manage and minimise risk in line with our Corporate Governance

- Provide end to end Commercial Management and Contract Administration on Contracts and Projects

- Be proactive in your approach to providing commercial support and resolving issues and disputes

- Ensure entitlement to recovery of revenue, variations and costs are fully demonstrated and recovered in accordance with the Contract

- Improve accuracy and robustness of Budgets & Forecasts

- Support implementation and embedding of Commercial processes

- Manage Subcontractors and Supply Chain to deliver the project objectives and minimise disputes, claims and domestic variations

- Ensuring timely issue and receipt of Valuations, Applications, Payment Notices along with critical focus on WIP, Debt and Cashflow

- Provide general advice, challenge and support on contractual matters, including; tender settlements, subcontract negotiations, preparing and reviewing CVRs, settling final accounts, claims, variations, monthly P&L reviews, and budgeting & forecasting.

What do I need?

You will be degree qualified (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying with demonstrable previous experience in the role, overseeing Mechanical & Electrical packages of work for a construction or engineering environment.

You will have a comprehensive commercial understanding of contract price build-ups and proven experience in managing Contractual relationships between clients, customers and contractors.

You will have an excellent ability to read and understand contract clauses and documents and be adept at communicating these to all levels within the business.

You will be an analytical and methodical individual with a professional attitude to your work. You’ll have excellent people management skills and be a team player, able to build and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

It is an essential requirement for this role that you have a full, current driving licence.

Randstad Engineering are recruiting for a Development Chemist on behalf of our client based in North Somerset.

The successful candidate will undertake development work at our clients Laboratory, including; process problem solving, beta and field trial support and product incident investigation both in the Laboratory and on customer's sites.

The position will be within the innovation, development and applications (IDA) group, interacting with an interdisciplinary environment of engineers and scientists.

The position will report to a senior development chemist or senior development engineer.

A degree of work-related travel is anticipated; there is an expectation that chemists support their developments in the field.

The Role:
  • Analytical chemistry skills including: instillation of test gases, leak checking of test equipment, analysis of gases using equipment including FTIR, mass spec, electrochemical cells, analysis and write up of data. Demonstrated ability to contribute to innovative technology development or product improvement.
  • Carry out risk assessments on prototype equipment or lab test rigs and to operate them safely.
  • Ability to interact with other members of the technical community at a detailed technical level.
  • Ability to transfer detailed technology requirements to an engineering group and ensure that the design intent is reflected in the resulting product designs.
  • An ability to describe technical subjects to a range of non-experts (eg. sales, marketing, engineering, management) and have the audience understand the basic concepts and benefits of technologies under development.

Skills and Experience:
  • The candidate will ideally have a minimum of a Chemistry or chemical Engineering degree or PhD, followed by between 1 - 3 years in analytical lab, gas chemistry lab or product development.
  • Graduates with suitable industrial placement experience will be considered. Other chemical or engineering backgrounds will be considered.
