Appropriate Adult

Change Grow Live

Under the Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 1984, children, young people and vulnerable adults, such as those who have a mental illness and/or a learning disability should not be interviewed by police officers about their suspected involvement in a criminal offence in the absence of an Appropriate Adult (AA).

We are looking for an unlimited number of volunteers who can attend custody suites and other secure settings (eg HMP Marshgate) in South Yorkshire.

The Appropriate Adult role is to facilitate communication, ensure the suspect’s rights are respected and upheld, to ensure the police interview is conducted properly and fairly and that interviewing officers take the vulnerability of the suspect into account. It is a role usually undertaken by parents or carers who often have little, if any, understanding, knowledge or experience of police investigative procedures and who may be too overwhelmed by the experience and emotionally involved to make their presence meaningful and effective.  However, there are numerous times when, and many reasons why parents or carers cannot or will not act as the suspect’s Appropriate Adult.

Change Grow Live provide the service for all vulnerable people in police custody and other secure settings (e.g. HMP Marshgate) in South Yorkshire.

The most common demand on the service is to support people who are to be interviewed by police officers about their suspected involvement in a criminal offence(s).  Most of those to be interviewed are detained in custody suites after being arrested but an increasing number are attending police stations voluntarily.  Appropriate Adults also attend police stations in South Yorkshire when requested to attend for:-

  • Administration of rights and entitlements
  • Serving I.D. Papers
  • Witnessing I.D. procedures
  • Witnessing strip and/or intimate searches
  • Witnessing informed consent for searches to take place in the absence of an Appropriate Adult
  • Witnessing drugs tests
  • Witness ‘disposal’ (e.g. charge, release under investigation, bail)
  • Witness a superintendent’s extension of detention beyond 24 hours
  • Pre-charge court appearance when police apply for detention to be extended beyond 36hours.

We need volunteers who are able to commit to being ‘on-call’ for a minimum of four hours per week for a period of at least twelve months following the preparatory training.  This role requires volunteers to have a full driving licence and access to their own, or a shared, motor vehicle

No formal qualifications are required as full training is given and ‘out of pocket’ expenses are reimbursed.

If you have any questions about any aspect of volunteering as an AA, please contact the project team on 0114 2288545.
