Plumbing Jobs Overview

Plumbers play an important part in ensuring the smooth running of our homes and businesses by fitting, maintaining and repairing piping, drainage, heating systems and domestic appliances like washing machines and gas cookers. Those who favour this profession can choose to work in various fields, requiring different skills. Some plumbers are "wet only" plumbers, who deal with piping in bathrooms and radiators, and some are "gas only" plumbers who fit gas central heating systems. Others specialise in industrial buildings working on air-conditioning and extraction systems. However, they all share basic skills including an understanding of legal and safety rules and the ability to follow technical plans.

Plumbing Jobs Education Requirements

Many aspiring plumbers enter the profession through an apprenticeship and learn the practical skills in the classroom and on the job. This normally takes two to three years to become fully qualified. Many employers require applicants to have an NVQ at level 2 or 3, so another option is to take a college course that teaches plumbing skills and health and safety. These courses can improve a person's chances of gaining a trainee position with a firm. Once qualified, it's possible to take higher plumbing qualifications to improve your chances of career progression to a position, such as a master plumber job or to become a specialist and work in a heating engineer job.
