Pest control technicians work in identifying and dealing with infestations by insects, rodents, and other pests. They may deal with problems in workplaces, private or commercial premises, sewers, restaurants, or public places such as parks. Although a large part of the profession involves clearing infestations, an important part of a job in pest control is also the education of clients about the best way to prevent infestations in the future. Because the job can involve dealing with delicate situations, excellent people skills are required, and a good level of physical fitness is a distinct advantage. The job isn't suitable for those with allergies, or those who are squeamish or uncomfortable with certain types of animal.
Pest Control Jobs Education Requirements
There are no formal education requirements for jobs in pest control, as training will generally be undertaken while working. However, a good basic standard of written and spoken English is usually required, as is a good level of numeracy – for example, the job may involve calculating dosages of poisons. Pest control jobs involve close work with the public, often in situations where tact is needed, and so a background in customer service jobs could be helpful, while a variety of health and safety or environmental jobs can provide valuable background knowledge and experience.

There are opportunities for pest control jobs within local authority environmental health departments, where with experience and extra training management openings can be found. However, most jobs in pest control are now found working for private companies on a private or public contract basis. There is also the possibility of becoming self-employed or taking on a franchise.

Starting salaries for jobs in pest control will usually be in the range of £17,000 to £20,000 and this can rise to around £25,000 with experience. Some positions will also offer bonuses or commission schemes.
