The Role

The Process and Equipment Engineering Team is involved with a number of activities including process improvement and equipment validation. This new role will sit within this team supporting laboratory operations through complete equipment life cycle management (LCM) including ensuring appropriate calibration and service and performing laboratory validation of key equipment used for NGS workflows, and supporting other process improvements.

Responsibilities include

  • Planning, scheduling and coordination of all equipment IQ, OQ, PQ, calibration, service, maintenance checks and repair

  • Booking services and communication with contractors, checking equipment meets required calibration specifications on receipt

  • Regular hands on validation of key laboratory equipment and specific validation of automated liquid handling and sequencing instrumentation returning to production

  • Maintenance of environmental and cold storage sensors on monitoring systems, and validation of new fridge/freezers

  • Equipment asset management including maintaining all electronic equipment records, calibration specifications, service contracts and other documentation including SOPs, work instructions, process maps, Risk Assessments and FMEAs on the QMS

  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with ILS team members and functional peers influencing and collaborating effectively to meet equipment LCM goals including clear communication on lab equipment calibration and service schedule, and instrument availability

  • Contribution to the improvement and optimisation of Equipment LCM process and NGS workflow steps through feasibility studies and tests

  • Sample preparation, reagent preparation and DNA sequencing

  • Troubleshooting issues affecting operations, identifying solutions whilst considering wider impacts to the pipeline and operation

  • Training and supporting laboratory operations to promote and assist implementation of process improvements and configuration changes

  • Coaching individuals to support skill development and career growth

  • In depth data analysis, interpretation and presentation of results, including reports within the QMS

  • Support of lean methodology including visualisation tools aiding efficiency

Experience

  • BSc or equivalent experience in a related field with some experience

  • High level of numeracy with familiarity and proficiency with use of spreadsheets and/or visualisation/analytical software, experience with Statistical Process Control, and critical parameter management a plus

  • Data collection, hands on skills, able to summarise, write reports and present results

  • Have an analytical but practical experimental approach to work

  • Ability to transfer skills across disciplines

  • Ability to complete tasks, including those that are not well defined

  • Able to troubleshoot with minimal guidance

Job Description

  • Creation of CNC programmes and detailed set-up sheet information for complex 3 Axis & 5-axis machined parts and sheet metal routed 2D parts using Catia V5 and Vericut software.
  • Tool and holding fixture design solutions.
  • Development of detailed planning instructions for individual part manufacture i.e. fabrication & machining.
  • Support the shop floor operations with technical support.
  • Work closely with the shop floor staff to ensure optimum machine run time.
Qualifications

ONC or equivalent in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.

Minimum of 5 years working within a manufacturing engineering environment.

Experience in the use of Catia V5 and Vericut software is essential.

About the Role

We are looking for an outstanding engineer to help us to shape the future of automation and machine engineering within Abcam manufacturing.

As a Senior Engineer at the company you will solve complex design and engineering problems in a cross-functional team environment. This provides an exciting and unique opportunity to drive progress in all aspects of manufacturing quality, efficiency and scalability.

Reporting to the Director of Global Technical Operations, you will be working in a small multi-disciplinary team on real-world machinery/instrumentation design and integration projects. The work will be broad in scope coveringinitial brief/feasibility to prototyping and final delivery, allowing you to develop deep industry and application knowledge. Previous experience in automation or equipment integration projects is required and a true passion for innovation and engineering is a must.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide automation-related technical expertise and knowledge of engineering fundamentals to Abcam manufacturing groups.

  • Help the team shape a standardised approach to automation strategy and equipment design that will be used throughout Abcam.

  • Identify development opportunities and help drive continuous improvement in manufacturing processes, systems, hardware and capacityutilisation.

  • Assist the re-design of existing processes for scalability and ease of automaton.

  • Partner with Abcam R&D groups to manage in-house proof-of-concept experiments/projects that will inform subsequent equipment design studies.

  • Helpconceptualisenew ideas for complex manufacturing systems by contributing knowledge of automation, mechanism design and robotics.

  • Engage and manage laboratory equipment vendors and other related suppliers on instrument / hardware integration projects.

Skills and Experience Required

  • At least 5 years of commercial experience in manufacturing automation, machine design or product development

  • Proven track record of working in multi-disciplinary teams in a complex technical project-based environment

  • Strong knowledge of commercial-off-the-shelf automation components

  • Understanding of quality control and risk management

  • Product design, machine design and CAD experience

  • Awareness of rapid prototyping and fabrication processes

  • Highly organised, able to work to deadlines and prioritise effectively

Desirable Skills
