Nursery Assistant Overview

Nursery assistants work with children from birth to the age of five, helping them to learn and develop in a safe environment. It is an excellent career choice for people who are good with children. Those who work in a nursery assistant job will have to plan and supervise activities for children, read stories and help children with basic literacy and numeracy.

Nurseries are generally open mornings and afternoons on all weekdays, and the occasional Saturday, so it is during these times that those in nursery assistant jobs will be required to work.

Nursery Assistant Educational Requirements

Academic qualifications are not a necessity for nursery assistants, though some employers may expect GCSEs in English and Maths. One qualification that is mandatory, however, is a Level 2 or 3 childcare qualification, which can be obtained through a local college. If these are achieved, a nursery assistant can work towards a Level 3 Early Years Educator certificate, which can be the first steeping stone towards teacher jobs or nursery manager jobs. It is also worth noting that a DBS check is mandatory before a person can begin working with children.

Nursery Assistant Job Market

With a national population on the increase, and parents having to devote more time to their work, there are a healthy number of nursery assistant jobs available. The Office for Standards in Education says there are just over 25,000 nurseries in the United Kingdom, with just over one million infants who need looking after by nursery assistant professionals.

Nursery Assistant Salary Information

Those who work in a nursery assistant job as a trainee can expect a starting salary of between £10,000-£14,000. Nursery assistants with greater experience and training, however, can earn up to £22,000.
