About this role

Our network is at the heart of everything we do; from sending a text, to air traffic control systems. It’s constantly evolving, and we’re at the forefront of technology for the next generation of cutting-edge mobile networks and services. Our Network Engineer apprentices play a key part in making sure that continues.

Your role in our team will be to ensure our networks are designed, tested, built and maintained with fresh, new, innovative ideas in mind. You’ll be managing different services across our networks, ensuring that our customers have the very best experience. Not only that, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in testing the latest networking technology, upgrading the existing network and the planning, installing and running of network elements and using world class data analytics to drive service improvements.

You’ll be taught job specific skills such as how to plan, design, build and test a simple network, applying appropriate security products and processes. From there, you’ll learn how to identify the key characteristics of a new network service, how to monitor the network, resolve incidents through problem solving and an understanding of how Service Management is key to this process. You will also gain knowledge of network traffic and how to determine the minimum network capacity required to meet network requirements. You’ll also be trained to identify and evaluate network security risks, ensuring our network design is secure and resilient.

Because we believe in placing the customer at the heart of everything we do, you’ll learn about things such as human-centred design and agile ways of working. You’ll also work with our customers directly, helping both technical and non-technical users alike, to install and maintain computer networks, as well as offer technical support to users where necessary.

About the apprenticeship you'll study for

As a Network Engineer, you’ll study for a Level 4 apprenticeship called Network Engineer.

  • Your apprenticeship will last for two years.
  • You’ll spend a minimum of 20% of your time learning and studying

Entry Requirements

You’ll need to achieve (or be on course to achieve) two A-Levels with a minimum of CC grades. You’ll also need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 4-9 (C or above) including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted.

As a Senior Network Engineer you will be part of a team of technical experts managing the iomart National and International Networks and be responsible for assisting with the technical delivery of all iomart managed hosting customers and network services. Within your role as a Senior Network Engineer you will manage systems to ensure 100% uptime for the network infrastructure and work closely with the Group Network Manager to ensure we maintain 100% uptime for our customers. As a subject matter expert you will be one of the go to people for network related queries including, but not limited to, technical design, best practices and deployment methodologies. Part of your role will include the investigation and diagnosis of network related incidents reported by customers and you will liaise with Upstream Providers and peers where necessary.

 

This role is to be based in Glasgow, London, Manchester or Gosport but you must be willing to travel to any of our UK locations as required. Furthermore, you will provide on call support for essential services/critical incidents as part of a rota so it is essential that you are comfortable with being on-call.


  • UK Government SC Clearance or be eligible to apply for same (5 years UK residence typically required for this)

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional or equivalent experience
  • Solid understanding of ACI fabric networks

The requires you to be part of a rota providing 24x7 support for our key ISP services as well as covering both planned and unplanned out of hours work as required. A self-motivated person who works well autonomously is essential for the role.

Working within an ITIL based framework the NOC Engineers ensure network and systems availability and performance, whilst supporting and monitoring key KPI’s and SLAs.

  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge on network technologies.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN switching and routing implementation and operation with specific knowledge of VLAN, VPN and MPLS networking.
  • Knowledge of QoS and LAN traffic management techniques.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure, TCP/IP, networking and information system security principles, practices and technologies.

About this role

Our network is at the heart of everything we do; from sending a text, to air traffic control systems. It’s constantly evolving, and we’re at the forefront of technology for the next generation of cutting-edge mobile networks and services. Our Network Engineer apprentices play a key part in making sure that continues.

Your role in our team will be to ensure our networks are designed, tested, built and maintained with fresh, new, innovative ideas in mind. You’ll be managing different services across our networks, ensuring that our customers have the very best experience. Not only that, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in testing the latest networking technology, upgrading the existing network and the planning, installing and running of network elements and using world class data analytics to drive service improvements.

You’ll be taught job specific skills such as how to plan, design, build and test a simple network, applying appropriate security products and processes. From there, you’ll learn how to identify the key characteristics of a new network service, how to monitor the network, resolve incidents through problem solving and an understanding of how Service Management is key to this process. You will also gain knowledge of network traffic and how to determine the minimum network capacity required to meet network requirements. You’ll also be trained to identify and evaluate network security risks, ensuring our network design is secure and resilient.

Because we believe in placing the customer at the heart of everything we do, you’ll learn about things such as human-centred design and agile ways of working. You’ll also work with our customers directly, helping both technical and non-technical users alike, to install and maintain computer networks, as well as offer technical support to users where necessary.

About the apprenticeship you'll study for

As a Network Engineer, you’ll study for a Level 4 apprenticeship called Network Engineer.

  • Your apprenticeship will last for two years.
  • You’ll spend a minimum of 20% of your time learning and studying

Entry Requirements

You’ll need to achieve (or be on course to achieve) two A-Levels with a minimum of CC grades. You’ll also need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 4-9 (C or above) including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted.
