Museum Jobs Overview

Bringing history to life through collections and exhibits can be a rewarding career. It takes several professionals with a wide variety of skills and experience to make a museum interesting, and to as many visitors as possible. A curator, for example, is traditionally responsible for managing collections, but there are many other people with different duties who ensure a museum runs smoothly. These include conservators who care for objects, education officers, craftspeople, designers, technicians, event managers, administrators, media staff, fundraisers, guides, retail assistants, building and grounds staff, caterers, security staff and cleaners.Employers may vary greatly, as most of the estimated 2,500 museums in the UK are run by central government, local authorities, universities or independent bodies.

Museum Jobs Education Requirements

There are many paths into a career in museums. Some non-professional positions do not need specific qualifications, although employers will usually seek a good general standard of education, especially in English and maths. As levels of responsibility increase, most institutions will require GCSEs, A Levels, NVQs, degrees and beyond. There are entry level museum vacancies across the country for museum guide jobs or museum technician jobs. A postgraduate qualification will be essential for roles in curatorship, conservation and archiving. Employers value experience, so experience gained outside of the museum sector and including volunteering could be extremely useful.

Museum Jobs Market

In a continuing challenging economic climate, museums will have to embrace technology even more to survive and thrive. Traditional museum professional roles may be broadened due to reduced workforces, so it is important that applicants hone a range of skills and experience.

Museum Jobs Salary

Salaries vary according to the level of responsibility. For instance, a museum assistant can earn from £14,000 to £19,000 and a curator from £25,000 to £35,000. Senior curators can receive £40,000-plus.
