They carry out surveys, collecting and analysing data on consumer behaviour, to identify their likes and dislikes, and what they think about certain subjects. They present the information to their clients, such as businesses, government bodies, advertising agencies and charities, to help them understand the market and make informed decisions. Different jobs in market research have different salaries, reflecting the level of responsibility. The type of work carried out varies depending on the employer, and could include product testing, evaluating customer preferences and satisfaction, assessing the competition, helping launch new products, and creating future initiatives and policies.

Interviewers gather information from people either face-to-face, over the phone or via email, using questionnaires prepared in advance.
