There are many types of jobs available within local authorities, from town council workers to directors of city council departments. Many local authorities have cut staffing levels in recent years, or outsourced services, due to falls in government funding, but they remain large employers in most parts of the UK. As such, vacancies arise regularly. As they are well known as equal opportunities employers, most jobs for local councils come with a pension and other benefits, such as good holiday entitlement and clearly laid out onward career paths.
Local Authority Education Requirements
For senior roles within local authorities, degrees or similar qualifications are a must, usually in business or public administration. However, many employees acquire skills on the job through training. To begin work as a local authority officer, four or five good GCSE grades are usually all that is needed. However, being able to use a computer, to write well, and to be good with numbers is usually expected, too.
Local Authority Vacancies Market
Due to staff turnover, local authority vacancies arise all the time, even if they are in a neighbouring town or county. Local authority vacancies range widely, with anything from council gardeners to directors of social services and social worker jobs being advertised. Some of the local authority jobs on offer require a degree of experience in delivering public services, but newcomers can still find routes into working for the council as an assistant officer, in many cases.
Local Authority Salary Information
When starting work for a local authority, a school leaver might expect to draw a salary which is in the region of £16,000 to £20,000 per year, according to the National Careers Service's latest information. Over time, these salaries can rise, as more responsibility is taken on to around £28,000 per year. Senior council officers, or those which lead teams, can expect pay to rise to about £37,000 per year, but this figure rises for directors of services, and this is usually negotiated directly, depending on the role on offer for those local authority jobs.
