Library Assistant Jobs Overview

A library assistant, sometimes called an "information assistant", is one of the top levels of staff still involved in the day-to-day running of a library. A library assistant is expected to handle organizational needs, such as cataloguing new materials and responding to enquiries, but also to directly assist library patrons, such as by helping them find what they are looking for, or by checking publications coming in and going out. In general, public library jobs vary from place to place in their exact demands, but most warrant a good deal of flexibility.

Library Assistant Jobs Educational Requirements

A library assistant is expected to have five GCSEs (A to C) or the equivalent, including English, at a minimum. Certain positions require higher standards, A-level or higher, or even specialised knowledge, such as university qualifications in various languages or sciences. Generally speaking, a high degree of education is a must. It is possible to get into a library assistant position via an apprenticeship, but these are not commonly available in many regions.

Library Assistant Jobs Market

The library assistant job market depends heavily on the region and its number of libraries. In a region such as London, where there is a large chain of public libraries, a vacancy may be filled more quickly than in a smaller town with a recently built library. However, the library assistant job market is not exactly saturated, and it is quite feasible to find a library assistant position if the right opportunity arises. Applicants may also like to consider archivist jobs, as these can have similar responsibilities.

Library Assistant Jobs Salary Information

Library assistants are paid a steady salary that varies somewhat depending on experience and position. A public library, including college or university libraries, will generally pay a library assistant £16,000 to £19,000 per year. Library assistant jobs in commercial libraries, information centres, or industrial locales generally pay a few thousand pounds higher per year, around £18,000 to £21,000, in accordance with the higher requirements they often have.
