Librarians are responsible for the day-to-day running of a library. They are mainly responsible for assisting visitors, cataloging and shelving books, arranging community events, promoting services, and maintaining up-to-date computer records. These duties can of course vary depending on the size of the library. There are many different types of library that a librarian can work in - the most common would be a public library, but also medical or University libraries.
Working hours for librarian jobs are generally consistent with the majority of time worked being on weekdays, in a traditional 9-5 slot, although work may also extend to some evenings and weekends. Librarians usually work in one location, but sometimes helping out with community events can extend this field. People for whom such a career might come into question include those who currently hold archivist jobs as the roles have a lot in common.
Librarian Educational Requirements
To qualify for librarian jobs, an undergraduate degree may be required. This degree could be in the field of librarianship, but a degree in English or a humanities subject will usually suffice. Another route to becoming a librarian can be achieved by initially working in library assistant jobs and working your way up - as a guideline, a minimum of two years' work experience is required before promotion can be earned.
Librarian Job Market
The librarian job market is on the increase, meaning more opportunities will arise over the next few years. The National Careers Service estimate that as many as 18,000 extra people will be employed in this sector of work over the next five years.
Librarian Salary Information
The National Careers Service say that newly qualified librarians can expect to earn a salary of between £19,000-£23,000. Those that gain more experience and become chartered could earn up to £29,000.
