Labourers are employed in virtually every industry in the UK. They help construct buildings and structures, sometimes working alongside professionals such as architects and planners, and tradesmen like plumbers and electricians. The work is manual and generally takes place outdoors. Main responsibilities includes:

  • Clearing sites
  • Digging trenches
  • Laying concrete
  • Fitting windows
  • Basic plastering and carpentry

The work is physically demanding and often involves working at heights and carrying heavy loads. As well as being physically fit, labourers needs basic literary, numeracy and IT skills to take measurements and make calculations, read technical plans and drawings, complete invoices and worksheets, keep work records and order materials. They use various hand and power tools and with training could learn to operate plant equipment and look for other career opportunities like construction forklifting jobs.

Labourer Jobs Education Requirements

Most labourers learn the trade on the job. Employers like applicants to have some on-site experience, so doing some voluntary work could be useful. You can also learn the skills on an apprenticeship with a construction firm with GCSEs in maths and English usually required. College courses can also be completed to prepare applicants for the industry. The main courses are City & Guilds Basic Skills in Construction award, the Intermediate/Advanced Construction award and Edexcel First Diploma in Construction. Further NVQ qualifications can be taken as a stepping stone to becoming and getting a site manager job or site supervisor job.

Prospects are good for labourers. Work in the construction industry is picking up. The Town and Country Planning estimate that 240,000 homes a year need to be built to meet Britain's housing shortage. People will be needed on sites around the country to work on planned projects.

Starting salaries are around £15,000 a year. Qualified labourers can earn up to £23,000. This could rise to £24,000 to £30,000 depending on the location and level of responsibility.
