Interior Design Jobs Overview

Interior design allows creative individuals to make full use of their skills and passion for creating stylish and visually appealing spaces. Interior designers may work for commercial or residential clients either as self-employed consultants or on behalf of an interior design company. This profession requires good spatial awareness, creativity, being familiar with a broad range of decorating techniques, products, room layouts, and building regulations. Nowadays, most interior decorators are well versed in 3D CAD tools and similar software programmes. Attention to detail and a genuine interest in the latest design trends are also important.

Interior Design Jobs Education Requirements

One possible entry route into this profession involves taking a vocational qualification (NVQ or HND) in interior design, computer-aided design, 3D design, architecture and interiors, or product design. Advanced apprenticeships may also be available in certain areas. Another alternative is to get a university degree in a design-related field, whether it is product design, textile design, decorative arts or even preparing for a graphic design job. The Chartered Society of Designers has published a list of all the endorsed courses available in the UK. There is also a range of MA courses in interior design offered at British universities, which can help applicants position themselves ahead of the competition.

Interior Design Jobs Market

Although many companies offer interior design jobs, this is a profession where self-employment clearly predominates. According to data published by the Office for National Statistics, approximately 50% of all interior designers are self-employed. As of 2015, there are 5,600 interior designers and design consultants in the UK, and this figure is expected to grow to 6,100 by 2020. Jobs growth is likely to concentrate in London and the South East.
