Housing officers manage rented properties belonging to local authorities, housing associations and charities. Usually, they look after a particular estate or group of properties. Sometimes having to deal with difficult clients and upsetting situations can be challenging and stressful, so housing officers need to be good at solving problems and working under pressure. Among the many tasks they juggle are inspecting properties, interviewing housing applicants, collecting rents and dealing with arrears, tackling complaints, repairs and nuisance neighbours; arranging legal action and attending court hearings; managing improvement loans and grants; providing welfare advice, and preparing reports.
Housing Officer Jobs Education Requirements
Although there are no set requirements, employers expect good literacy and numeracy. Some may ask for GCSEs, A levels or higher. Applicants can get into the job through an apprenticeship or start off in administrative assistant jobs or housing assistant jobs, and with training secure a housing officer job. Another option is to take a qualification at college accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH). After a few years in the role, there may be opportunities for promotion to management positions. Those with a degree or HND in a relevant subject such as housing, planning, property management, urban studies, business or social administration can apply for a place on a graduate trainee scheme with a housing organisation.

According to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), the UK population is forecast to reach 70 million by mid-2027. This growth, which is faster than in the past, will generate a higher demand for housing and see an increase in the 150,000 people who already work in the housing sector.
Housing Officer Jobs Salary
Qualified housing officers can expect to earn between £21,000 and £29,000 a year, depending on the type of organisation. Salaries for those in senior management roles can rise to £50,000 or more.
