Health and Safety Jobs Overview

Health and safety jobs involve evaluating risks and carrying out assessments, especially for control of substances that are hazardous to health (COSHH). H&S staff also have responsibility for designing safe working systems, controlling contractors and investigating incidents and accidents. Good written and verbal communication skills are an important pre-requisite for most health and safety jobs, as effective contact and collection or dissemination of information is a key part of the role - including delivering informal training sessions and some in-house courses. A health and safety officer is required to have a good level of technical knowledge of the area in which he or she works, as well as an eye for detail to ensure compliance with the relevant regulations. Junior and co-ordinator roles involve assisting with safety information and reports, promoting awareness of best practises and coordinating the implementation of improvement plans.

Health and Safety Jobs Education Requirements

A health and safety qualification such as an IOSH certificate (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) is often required. Various other qualifications promote the effective management of health and safety in the workplace, including NEBOSH certificates. CMIOSH Chartered Membership and a degree level education are necessary for senior positions, although a university degree may not always be required for junior posts. Technical experience or a vocational qualification may suffice for coordinator roles.
