Handyman Jobs Overview

A position as a handyman is well suited to people who are practical, imaginative, and have a good grounding in DIY. The job will usually involve a lot of variety, and will often require improvisation to solve problems as efficiently as possible. Many positions feature a lot of contact with people, often vulnerable people, and so a friendly manner combined with patience and a desire to help is essential.

Handyman Jobs Education Requirements

There are no specific qualifications needed to take on a handyman job, although handymen will need to be competent in a wide range of DIY skills, including basic joinery, plumbing, and even electricals. Vocational qualifications in any of these areas would be helpful in securing a position, but most employers will be looking firstly for experience, whether paid or voluntary. Depending on the employer, it may be necessary to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (DBS) if there is the likelihood of coming into contact with children, the elderly, or disabled people.

Handyman Jobs Market

There is constant demand for people with solid practical skills such as handymen, but with no formal qualification requirements it's not always easy to secure a position. Many local colleges offer certificates in aspects of DIY, which can be useful in demonstrating mastery of basic skills, but experience in carpenter jobs and other trades jobs is the most valuable asset which employers are looking for. If necessary, this can be gained by doing voluntary work for a charity or other non-profit organisation.

Handyman Jobs Salary Information

Earnings for handyman work vary enormously depending on duties and experience, but a ballpark figure of between £14,000 and £21,000 is realistic. Many workers in this area are self employed and charge by the hour, where a typical rate is between £7 and £10.
