GP Jobs Overview

A job in general practice offers a varied, challenging, and stimulating career for those with appropriate medical qualifications, whether as a doctor (General Practitioner) or a practice nurse. Both positions offer extensive contact with the public and are ideal for those with excellent people skills, high levels of empathy, and the ability to cope with sometimes difficult situations. GP positions can be extremely rewarding, both in terms of helping make a difference to patients' lives, but also in the satisfaction of dealing with the unexpected on a daily basis. There are also positions available in larger practice for those with no formal medical background, such as office management or bookkeeping.

GP Jobs Education Requirements

A GP doctor position requires a full degree in medicine, followed by a two year foundation course, and finally specialist training in general practice. The medical degree will take 4, 5, or 6 years depending on existing qualifications.

GP Jobs Market

Most GPs will work for the public sector, either directly employed or self employed under contract. GP vacancies can begin as trainees before becoming employed in a practice, rising to earn partner or owner status over time. While the focus of a General Practice will of course always be the GP, today's modern practice includes plenty of other opportunities. Practice nurse jobs offer chances for qualified nurses to work in a general practice setting, while there are also opportunities for office administration and receptionist jobs.

GP Jobs Salary Information

A trainee doctor will begin on a salary of around £22,500. A full-time, fully qualified GP will earn between £53,000 and £84,000 with the NHS, although many doctors work on a self-employed basis, where earnings can be considerably higher. A typical Practice Nurse salary will be around £26,000 to £35,000 depending on experience, while office-related and other positions within a general practice will pay rates equivalent to the wider market.
