Game Jobs Overview

Game Jobs, with the exception of some software programming, are not usually specialized, and offer a large variety of potential careers. This field of work acts as a job crossroad, where both art and technology collide, requiring not only software programming skills (such as C++, JavaScript, Python, HTML5, etc), but also art skills (including 2D/3D animation, 2D/3D character modelling, texture artists, etc), as well as writers and project managers. People choosing this field will be, in general, helping to create a variety of games, whether they are for a mobile device, console, or PC.

Game Jobs Requirements

Although not all jobs specifically require a degree, most jobs, such as developer jobs or senior developer jobs, often require any relevant experience in their relative fields. Artistic careers like designer jobs prefer knowledge of art-related software, but still accept people with relevant art experience. Knowledge of JavaScript, C++, and Python is an asset for most jobs, but knowing more programming languages is better, as is any additional education (typically a 2:1 Bachelor Degree is preferred).

Game Jobs Market

Game Jobs are on the rise according to a 2015 Ukie Games Industry report, with much of this growth due to the increasing demand for games on new devices and platforms. In spite of the versatile nature and sheer quantity of Game Jobs, finding a career that suits an individual's interest and skill is easy, but finding a job that pays above £12,000 may be difficult without more than 1 year of relevant experience.

Game Jobs Salary Information

Salaries are very varied, as Game Jobs are not specific to any one field of study or skill. In general, with 1-2 years of relevant experience, starting salaries can be anywhere between £12,000 and £35,000, but often depend on the type of job being worked, the size of the company, and what is required.
