Funeral directors deal with people who have suffered bereavement. The job entails communicating in an empathic manner and making sure the funeral is carried out to fully meet the requirements of the client. Tasks include:

  • Heavy lifting and chauffeuring
  • Providing advice to relatives and friends of the deceased about the funeral, and completing paperwork
  • Transporting the deceased to a place of repose
  • Preparing the deceased for burial or cremation
  • Being in attendance at the funeral to make sure things run to plan

Funeral Director Jobs Education Requirements

Formal educational qualifications are not required as on-the-job training is provided. Prospective employers will need to be satisfied that a person seeking to enter the industry has the necessary people and communications skills and can behave in a dignified manner. A good standard of education is necessary for the administrative aspects of the job. As a person grows in experience, they can study for recognised qualifications, including the Diploma in Funeral Directing

Funeral Director Job Market

Although funeral home jobs are not abundant, every town of any size will have at least one funeral directors firm. Some are small to medium sized family operations, others sizeable national companies. It is with the latter that the a person is likely to find a funeral director job

Funeral Director Jobs Salary Information

According to the National Careers Service, trainee funeral directors can expect to earn in the region of £15,000, which will rise with experience and level of responsibility to around £30,000. Senior managers in large national companies and self-employed funeral directors who own their company have the potential to earn more. Specialist occupations within the industry, for example funeral home mortuary jobs, command higher salaries but often require further training.
