Forestry Jobs Overview

There are a wide number of jobs in forestry available throughout the UK, some of these will be working for a charity such as the Woodland Trust, the Forestry Commission, as well as privately owned entities. For anyone entering the industry, forestry work is not just a case of patrolling the forestry and making sure everything is alright. A career in forestry often requires a wide range of skills and abilities, including land management skills. A strong desire to be hands on and work the land is a pre-requisite. The work can be physically down, with heavy machinery used during harvesting. Working as a forestry officer will usually require one to control budgets and project manage each piece of forestry within their control. Sometimes forestry officers will be required to work at more than one site.

Forestry Jobs Education Requirements

There are two means of entering the industry, either as a labourer, where the requirement is to have at least a minimum education standard such as GCSEs. Those wishing to go into a higher entry level, such as a forestry officer, will be required to have a higher education standard, usually related to the forestry field. A number of related HNDs and courses are available.

Forestry Jobs Market

The jobs market is quite buoyant but competition is very strong for those wishing to enter the industry. Most jobs in the sector are in and around the Scotland, Wales and Northern England. Candidates wishing to work in the sector, but prefer a career nearer home, often find arborist jobs or gardening jobs are good alternatives.

Forestry Jobs Salary Information

A forester is likely to earn around £21,500. Similar jobs such as tree surgeons and arborists can expect to earn between £14,000 and £17,000. Those who progress into management positions usually earn around £30,000.
