Some common roles include fashion advertising jobs, textile buyer and digital design artists. Thus, there are a number of opportunities for those with the proper qualifications.

Fashion Design Jobs Education Requirements

Most candidates will possess at least a two-year degree from an accredited institution. Some common fields of study may include (but are not necessarily limited to):

  • Textiles
  • Graphic design
  • Clothing technology
  • Art

However, the online job portal Prospects highlights that many jobs in fashion design are now being secured by those with a bachelor's (BA) degree in similar fields. Some who wish to enjoy a competitive edge may even choose to obtain a master's degree in the future.

Fashion Design Jobs Market

Currently, there are more than 550,000 fashion design jobs in the United Kingdom alone. The National Careers Service estimates that this number will grow to 617,000 over the next four years. It is also interesting to note that 49 per cent of all professionals within this industry fall under the self-employed status. While there are more men than women who are professional fashion designers, the gender gap is not as wide when compared to other markets such as construction or engineering. The National Careers Service also highlights that there are 24 per cent current vacancies within the world of fashion design.

Fashion Design Jobs Salary Information

The average starting salary for an entry-level position is approximately £17,000 per year. Mid-level fashion design jobs or specialised positions such as a graphic designer jobs can pay between £25,000 to £42,000 on an annual basis.
