Factory Jobs Overview

Factory jobs represent a sizeable workforce within the United Kingdom, though roles will vary from industry to industry. Some common positions include assembler and fabricator jobs, CNC machine operators and general supervisors. Important skills such as an attention to detail and the ability to meet production targets are normally required. Discrete knowledge of certain types of machines may also be called for.

Factory Jobs Education Requirements

As the concept of the "typical" factory job is rather broad, educational requirements will primarily revolve around the desired position. Those working on an assembly line may require little or no prior training. As a direct contrast, industrial designer jobs require previous certifications. Degrees in engineering or business administration are associated with senior positions while accreditations through the City and Guilds scheme, such as a Level 3 Certificate in Fabrication and Welding Engineering, can provide applicants with a competitive edge.

Factory Jobs Market

The majority of factory jobs, particularly those involved within heavy industries, are occupied by men. The National Careers Service highlights that this proportion can be as high as 83 per cent, with most factory jobs being associated with a full-time position. Unlike some other industries, the labour force within the United Kingdom is expected to contract between 2016 and 2020, with predictions indicating that the number of available positions will decrease to below 515,000 by 2020. However, those with specialised skills or who possess a degree in higher education should still fare reasonably well.

Factory Jobs Salary Information

The online employment portal Prospects states that the average entry-level factory job is associated with a salary of between £12,000 pounds and £15,000 pounds per year. Those with special skills or who may interested in applying for a supervisory role may be able to earn between £15,000 and £20,000 annually.
