The HMC team is involved in developing key models for human disease by reprogramming somatic cells into pluripotent stem cell lines and assisting with downstream applications like gene editing and differentiation. Additionally, we provide and maintain a well-equipped communal laboratory space which facilitates interaction between the groups working with human models, pluripotent stem cells and gene editing.

By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences. Thus, together with the capabilities of the other, primarily X-ray based, imaging instruments at Diamond the group provides a platform for using electrons, X-rays and visible light to image biological samples from proteins to whole cells and tissues across a diverse range of length and time scales.

Over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Francis Crick Institute developed a range of COVID-19 research platforms, including a unique high throughput live virus assay platform to quantify neutralising antibody activity against a range of SARS-CoV-2 variants in thousands of samples simultaneously. This important work will feed into the UKRI funded PROVAC consortium, comprising researchers at the Crick (CSU, WIC, Legacy study), Cambridge University and Imperial College to determine the direction of SARS-CoV-2 evolution for ‘evolutionarily smart’ vaccine design.
