What is a Quantity Surveyor? 

A quantity surveyor works out exactly how much our projects cost to construct and oversees finances on site from the very first estimate to the final bill. They ensure the build is value for money for a client and meets all relevant legal and quality standards.  

So how does the trainee scheme work? 

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, you will be assigned a mentor, who will work with you to develop your on the job experience. You will work directly within one of our teams, learning Rydon's approach to quantity surveying. At the same time, you will study part time (usually on a day release to college basis) and your mentor will support you in your college/further education through providing advice practical tips to help you succeed in attaining an industry recognised qualification and a long term career at Rydon. 

What does a typical trainee scheme at Rydon entail? 

The exact traineeship and route your learning takes will depend very much on your current education. Examples of how we will develop your learning and experience include:

  • If you join us with A-Levels/BTEC equivalent, we would look to enhance your learning through an HNC Route or even a degree route
  • If your learning style is more vocational, we could support your development with a more traditional apprentice route (resulting in a recognised qualification). 

Your learning journey is in your hands and Rydon will work with you to advise the best learning route to meet your longer term aspirations. Whichever route you take, you can be sure that Rydon will provide some of the industry's best on the job training and development - you're in great hands. Whilst you learn, you will be working on a range of projects, and supporting the team in the successful financial closure of these projects. You will learn practical quantity surveying skills through working closely with a mentor and being part of a successful delivery team.

On the job training:

  • Subcontractor comparisons
  • Subcontractor enquiries
  • General training in surveying
  • General training in different areas of construction, such as estimating, buying and site management
  • Appropriate Health & Safety Training.

To be considered for these exciting opportunities you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • To meet our apprentice selection criteria, you will need to have a minimum of GCSE (grade C/Level 4 or above) in Maths and English.
  • If you already hold A-Levels, NVQ or even HNC in a construction discipline at grade C (or equivalent) level, you will qualify to be considered for our core trainee opportunities.

In addition you'll need to be inquisitive by nature, be confident and happy to work with lots of different people and be looking for a long term career in construction. Good computer skills (particularly Word and Excel) are a must along with a keen eye for detail.

We are currently seeking to recruit Graduate Quantity Surveyors to work on one of our prestigious London construction schemes. This could include our highly regarded residential and education schemes in Ealing (worth more than £300m) - or one of our other well-recognised London based schemes. As a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, you will work on site within a smaller phase on one of these schemes, and we will give you the training and development to become a leader of tomorrow. Could a Graduate Quantity Surveyor role be right for you? 

If you are curious by nature, like to ask questions and don’t take things at face value, this would be a good fit for you. This is not a desk job, so you won’t be sitting behind a computer crunching numbers. It’s a hands on role, so you will be out and about working with lots of people in different scenarios. If you like  flexibility and are self-motivated and pretty driven, this could be for you.

As a graduate, you can expect the following training and development as part of our scheme.

On the job training

About Costain and your project.

We are currently looking for all levels (Senior, Practitioner and Junior) of Cost Engineer to work on our EDF Project Controls Framework nationwide.

 

Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

 

Costain supports EDF Energy Generation to maximise the lifespan of its eight UK nuclear power stations and prepare for defuelling and decommissioning. Costain's role is to provide project controls and commercial managed services to portfolios and programmes of work across all of EDF's eight UK nuclear power stations. As part of this work Costain will develop people capability in core project control skills and provide specialist support to EDFs Central Technical Organisation to improve project performance and deliver cost efficiencies.

What will I be doing?

The Cost Engineers are responsible for providing cost management support to the EDF Energy Nuclear Generation work portfolio and will monitor, control and forecast the costs during the Project lifecycle. The main focus will be to work with Project Managers to manage project costs and their integration with the management of risk, change and the schedule in accordance with EDF Energy Generation Company standards and processes.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the cost trackers for all workpacks across the programme.
  • Work with the Project Managers to ensure contracts and forecasts are effectively managed.
  • Report to Deputy Programme Manager in accountability meetings.
  • Control, monitor, analyse and report cost related aspects for designated projects within a Portfolio.
  • Implement the correct and appropriate cost management tool for the project in accordance with Central Technical Organisation (CTO) Programme Office processes/templates.
  • Assist in development and use of Project Control Structures (CBS, OBS, WBS etc.).
  • Understand the basis of the estimate.
  • Ensure all cost and contract transactions on a project are understood and managed in an appropriate way.
  • Ensure all variances to the cost baseline are communicated in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the necessary cost management interface is in place with Finance and ensure regular communications.
  • Support the EDF Energy Business Planning process.
  • Active involvement in the change process, understanding the reasons for and factors influencing each change to the project’s cost baseline plus the implications of such change.
  • Continually monitor Project Risk and Change status to maintain current forecast.
  • Review and understand, with the assistance of the Planning Engineer, the schedule progress and it’s alignment to the Project Control Structure.
  • Liaise with Project team members and contractors with regards to progress and financial forecasting.
  • Update the Cost Tool to comply with Project Reporting Cycles.
  • Monitor, control and analyse the project cost information, identify variances and bring these to the attention of the Project Manager with possible alternatives. Prepare specific reports to facilitate challenge and analysis to meet the project’s specific needs.
  • Challenge cost variances against the baseline plan with individual task leaders/contractors and/or outside stakeholder management as necessary to enable mitigation.
  • Contribute to progress meetings as required in support of the Project Manager.
  • Regular interfacing and integration with the project Planning Engineer to maintain an aligned financial position with the project Primavera plan.
  • Contribute to the drafting and updating of Project Documents (PDD, IRM papers etc.) to ensure that they contains the project Scope of Work, KPI’s, payment milestones and the methodology for controlling the project schedule, costs and variances etc.
  • Contribute to Lessons Learnt process throughout the Project lifecycle.

About you

The Cost Engineers will have a breadth of experience preferably in a highly regulated environment with Nuclear experience being beneficial (but not essential).

 

Skills

  • High level of numeracy and excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent MS Office skills and well versed in the preparation of reports and information using packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Exhibits a strong awareness of the level of interaction required with the project team function to support the successful delivery of projects.
  • Breadth of experience across whole project and programme lifecycle. (e.g. Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation/Commissioning processes).
  • The ability to reconcile cost information as it applies to the programmes of work.
  • Proficient in the use of estimating, scheduling, programming and risk tools.
  • Proficient in the use of Earned Value Analysis.
  • Self motivated with good interpersonal skills working in a team environment.
  • Good attention to detail with good time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentational skills.

Experience

  • Relevant experience in Project Controls and/or Project Delivery, preferably in a highly regulated environment.
  • Evidence of strong engineering background, ideally within a safety/regulated environment 

Qualification

  • Junior - Ideally HNC/HND qualified in a cost related discipline or relevant experience, but not essential.
  • Practitioner - Ideally degree qualified in a cost related discipline or relevant experience.

Role Overview:

You will be capable of managing the day to day running of building projects up to approx. £12M in value with supervision from a visiting Senior QS, or alternatively be a “number 2” on a larger project up to £30M in value.

What is a Quantity Surveyor? 

A quantity surveyor works out exactly how much our projects cost to construct and oversees finances on site from the very first estimate to the final bill. They ensure the build is value for money for a client and meets all relevant legal and quality standards.  

So how does the trainee scheme work? 

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, you will be assigned a mentor, who will work with you to develop your on the job experience. You will work directly within one of our teams, learning Rydon's approach to quantity surveying. At the same time, you will study part time (usually on a day release to college basis) and your mentor will support you in your college/further education through providing advice practical tips to help you succeed in attaining an industry recognised qualification and a long term career at Rydon. 

What does a typical trainee scheme at Rydon entail? 

The exact traineeship and route your learning takes will depend very much on your current education. Examples of how we will develop your learning and experience include:

  • If you join us with A-Levels/BTEC equivalent, we would look to enhance your learning through an HNC Route or even a degree route
  • If your learning style is more vocational, we could support your development with a more traditional apprentice route (resulting in a recognised qualification). 

Your learning journey is in your hands and Rydon will work with you to advise the best learning route to meet your longer term aspirations. Whichever route you take, you can be sure that Rydon will provide some of the industry's best on the job training and development - you're in great hands.   • To meet our apprentice selection criteria, you will need to have a minimum of GCSE (grade C/Level 4 or above) in Maths and English.
