Construction Jobs Overview

The construction industry is one of the most important sectors in the UK. We depend on construction workers to build and maintain buildings nationwide. And since the pandemic of 2020, there’s been a significant shortage of skilled construction workers available, but also an increasing demand. As a result, it’s a great time to get into the industry, as not only are there plenty of construction jobs available but also, in many cases, wages are on the increase.

A career in construction can last a lifetime. While you may start out in a junior apprentice role, there will likely be opportunities for you to climb the ranks up to supervisor and managerial positions. For example, you could start out as a newbie on a site and within a few years find yourself as a sought-after builder and eventually work your way up to construction-manager level.

And not all construction careers are physically demanding, as some are more office-based. Civil and structural engineers will typically divide themselves between the office and the site, while office jobs such as administrators, lawyers, and customer service reps are all needed in this line of work. For more on what to expect in the construction industry, you can also check out our construction job description.

So if you are interested in exploring your construction career options, you may wish to consider:

Constructions Jobs Skills and Education

As the construction industry is so vast, the skills and education level required for construction roles can vary hugely from job to job. However, there are multiple ways you can get started in the construction industry. Here are just a few:

  • Work experience – Your vocational college may offer work experience options in the construction industry. This is a great way to get hand-on experience in various roles on a construction site. It’s also a great networking opportunity for future employment.
  • Apprenticeship – Some building companies and civil service departments offer construction apprenticeships. This is usually a paid program which teaches you the essential entry-level skills needed for your construction jobs.
  • Attend college – If you want to study a construction related subject at university you will need to complete A Levels at college first. But if you want to go straight into work post-college, there are various vocational construction related college courses available. These include the likes of brickwork, carpentry and joinery, plastering, plumbing, and electrical installation.
  • T Levels – T Levels are two-year technical qualifications that are offered in England only. One T Level is the equivalent to completing three A Levels, and it provides a combination of theory and practice training. Construction T Level options include building services engineering, onsite construction and design, surveying, and planning for construction.
  • Attend university – If you’re keen to go straight into a managerial role, then you may decide to get a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management. This will take at least three years and may include on-site training as well as learning in a classroom environment.

Before you can work on a construction site, you must obtain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme card (CSCS). This provides proof that you have the adequate training and skills required to safely work on-site. You will need to provide evidence of your construction training and have passed the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test (HS&E) within two years to obtain your CSCS card.

How Much Do Construction Workers Make?

A construction worker’s earnings vary depending on the position and seniority level. A bricklayer can expect an average starting salary of around £32,240, whereas a construction site supervisor can expect upwards of £42,120. Explore online salary calculators to see what you can expect to earn in your chosen construction field. And remember that this doesn’t factor in signing-on bonuses, potential overtime, or other bonus opportunities.

Update Your CV for Construction Jobs

You will likely need to submit your CV and often a cover letter as well to be considered for these jobs. Tailor your CV to the type of construction job you’re applying for and make sure to include all your relevant skills, on-the-job training, and general construction experience. You can also include transferrable skills from past non-construction roles, such as people management.

Don’t worry if your CV isn’t up to date yet or even if you haven’t written one yet, as we have plenty of CV examples and cover letter templates as well. A cover letter allows you to explain why you chose a career in construction and what specific skills you can bring to the table.

Preparing for Your Construction Job Interview

Interviews for construction jobs may include several rounds of questioning, and you may be asked to perform some physical tasks. The interview component will likely involve you explaining all your technical abilities and how well you perform in a team environment. Some construction hirers may then invite you for a trial day or shift to test your skills in real time. To prepare for your interview, have a look at our common interview question and answers and also our advice on how to stay calm during tough interviews.
