Concierge Jobs Overview

There are a variety of different concierge positions, all ultimately with their roots in hospitality. Most concierges are in charge of greeting guests or customers at hotels, shops, university buildings or care facilities, among other locations. Making others feel welcome and providing help and direction are key parts of concierge duties. Some concierges, particularly security concierges, are also in charge of identifying and dealing with security disruptions in their building of work. All types of concierge may or may not be charged with testing fire alarms and other security systems, depending on the position.

Concierge Jobs Education Requirements

The requirements to be a concierge vary from position to position. Most concierge jobs require certifications, such as a Level 1 Certificate in General Hospitality from a college course. Other concierge positions may require more specializations certifications, such as a NVQ L2 in Door Keeping for a security concierge job. Work experience, including from related jobs such as hotel porter jobs or receptionist jobs, is often an asset or a requirement.

Concierge Jobs Market

Concierge job availability varies from region to region. Concierge positions can be held for a very long time depending on the employer, and larger cities have a correspondingly larger number of businesses which need concierges, so it is often easier to find concierge jobs in more urban areas. This is particularly true of hotel concierge jobs, as larger cities are more common business destinations for travellers.

Concierge Jobs Salary

Depending on the position, concierge jobs may be salaried or paid by the hour. According to the best available sources including polls of existing concierges, concierge salaries might range from £13,000 to £22,000 depending on experience, with head concierges, night workers and security concierges receiving somewhat more. PayScale suggests that the median is £18,000 and that hourly wages, where applicable, usually match the pay given by a salary.
