Coach Driver Jobs Overview

There is a wide variety of driver jobs, but a coach driver must be able to deal with the demands of passengers as well as those demands found on the road. In addition to general driving skills, coach drivers must be excellent at navigating, have reasonable customer skills, possess a good working knowledge of the relevant traffic regulations and be diligent at all times behind the wheel. Coach drivers who work on school runs will also often need to be cleared by the relevant local and policing authorities. Drivers might expect to work up to 48 hours per week and some touring coach drivers will expect to be away from home for days at a time.

Coach Driver Jobs Education Requirements

No formal educational qualifications are needed in order to start a career as a coach driver. However, any coach driver vacancies that come up will require applicants to have a full UK or EU driving licence, at least. Moreover, many will specify that applicants must also hold a Passenger Carrying Vehicle Licence plus a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. These are the same certification systems that the government has in place for bus driver jobs. Some employers will take on applicants without these accreditations, but this is usually as trainee driver roles only.

Coach Driver Jobs Market

Coach driver vacancies tend to be targeted to applicants with the necessary skills to drive long vehicles already. However, some opportunities for training are also to be found where coach companies are understaffed and need to up-skill people new to the industry. Coach driving is a responsible and specialist job which can often mean working unsocial hours, so companies tend to be on the look-out for applicants who have the necessary skills or who are willing to learn them.

Coach Driver Jobs Salary Information

Coach driver jobs start from £13,000, depending on location and experience, according to the National Careers Service. Experienced coach drivers might expect their annual salary to rise to about £20,000, but this can be increased if overtime is paid for extra work regularly throughout the year.
