Childcare Jobs Overview

There are a large range of career opportunities within the childcare sphere, from childminders who look after one or more children in a domestic setting, to nursery assistant jobs or nursery manager jobs for those supervising and educating larger groups of pre-school children. For all types of positions, an affinity with children is an essential quality needed, as childcare workers are in effect temporary parental figures for the children in their care. Childcare jobs are especially suited to those who love children and want to make a career out of working with them, whether as a first job or a change of direction.

Childcare Jobs Education Requirements

For a childminder who works at home looking after one or more children, there are no formal educational requirements. It is necessary to register with Ofsted and undergo various background checks before completing a short introductory training course. For a nursery nurse / assistant, it is possible to work with no qualifications although only under the supervision of a fully qualified nursery worker who has achieved a relevant Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. Again, background checks must be passed. On-the-job training will in time allow childcare workers to gain the qualifications necessary to assume responsibility for a child without supervision.

Childcare Jobs Market

Although there is a large demand for childcare, the competition for entry level jobs is high. In the absence of qualifications and/or experience, people who want to start working in this area often find the best way is to take on an entry level position and work upwards. Childcare workers with experience and qualifications are in much higher demand, and can expect to earn significantly more.

Childcare Jobs Salary Information

In 2012, the National Childcare Association reported that childminders charged between £3.63 and £5.42 per hour per child, while nursery workers can expect between £10,000 and £30,000 per year depending on qualifications, experience, and responsibilities.
