Chef Jobs Overview

Chef jobs involve food preparation in a variety of settings, from large hotels and restaurants to individual homes. In addition to having expert knowledge of food preparation techniques and of various culinary specialities, chefs must be skilled at food presentation and committed to working according to the best health and safety practices. Applicants should have the ability to multi task and excellent organisational skills. Chefs must be able to work under pressure and to work either as part of a team, or in the case of senior roles, to command a team of cooks and kitchen staff. Full and part-time positions are available.

Chef Jobs Education Requirements

Many applicants begin their career as assistants or trainees (also known as commis chefs) and progress to senior roles like cook or into head chef jobs after accumulating experience and qualifications. The most valuable qualifications are those related to the food industry, including NVQ, HND, ASET, and BTEC certificates in hospitality and catering, cookery, food safety, food preparation, and international cuisine. Applicants who are interested in senior roles may want to consider qualifications in hospitality management and team supervision. Several UK universities offer undergraduate degrees in the culinary arts and professional cookery. Training is also available from private schools.

Chef Jobs Market

The most recent industry snapshot carried out by the Hospitality Guild revealed that a large number of chef jobs (over 31%) are permanent and full time, although seasonal jobs are available in ski resorts, hotels, and cruise ships. The hospitality sector provides the vast majority of jobs, but positions are also available at healthcare, educational, and corporate institutions. Some of the larger establishments may require chefs that specialise in a specific area, such as pastries, desserts, sauces, fish dishes, etc. These roles are known as chef de partie jobs.
