There are two types of Charity Shop Vacancies - paid and voluntary. Paid jobs are those held by shop managers and sometimes there is a deputy manager too. It is their job to ensure that the shop is run in accordance with the rules set by the charity, work out rotas, attend regional meetings to discuss targets and any necessary improvements. Volunteers, with the help of the managers, will work in the shop, sorting out donated goods, pricing them and selling to the general public, so good people skills and a talent for numeracy is important.
Charity Shop Jobs Education Requirements
No formal educational requirements are needed to take charity shop vacancies, although being able to speak reasonable English is a must. An ability to communicate with people from all walks of life and a pro-active attitude in assisting them and the charity in any way possible is considered far more important than exams. Previous experience with retail jobs is valued but not essential.

Walk down any high street it’s common to see charity shops looking for volunteers. Paid positions are usually advertised through a respected agency. Charity shop vacancies should be filled by candidates with previous experience, although not necessarily in charitable work. For example, someone who has had a librarian job would be well suited to working in a charity bookshop.
Charity Shop Jobs Salary Information
Charity shop jobs of a managerial nature normally pay around £14,000 to £18,000 per year in the larger, well known organisations. As the salary is pro-rata, with certain shifts being covered by volunteers, the working week can be shortened resulting in a lower take-home pay. A deputy manager can expect approximately £12,000, which again is pro-rata. Many charities offer additional benefits such as personal pension plans.
