Care Jobs Overview

Care jobs are ideal for people who like to help other people and make a difference to their lives, whether it be providing daily care or working to transform people's situations and prospects. Jobs in this field range from care assistants, who help vulnerable people in all aspects of their daily lives from personal care to shopping, to residential support workers who work with people in residential care, particularly those with specific needs or problems including health and behavioural issues. Although the work can be very challenging and isn't for everyone, it can be immensely rewarding for those suited to the vocation. A successful care worker needs to have excellent interpersonal skills, a genuine empathy for people of all backgrounds, and the ability to work both as part of a team and alone.

Care Jobs Education Requirements

To work in residential support jobs or care assistant jobs, relevant paid or unpaid experience is generally more important than formal qualifications, although basic numeracy and literacy is essential. Some residential support positions, particularly in the private sector, may require a relevant Level 2 qualification. In both cases background checks will need to be carried out.

Care Jobs Market

Care jobs are dominated by women, with the Office for National Statistics reporting that 87% of positions are filled by females, with just over half of jobs being on a part time basis. There is a 26% skill shortage, so candidates with both experience and qualifications have a distinct advantage.

Care Jobs Salary Information

Entry level care assistant jobs usually have a salary of around £12,500 which can rise to around £21,000 with qualifications, experience, and extra responsibilities. In some cases low cost or free accommodation will be included in the package. Residential support workers can begin on a salary of £17,000 which can rise to £25,000.
