Bookkeeping Jobs Overview

A bookkeeper, also known as an accounting clerk, is the person in a company or organisation responsible for the day-to-day financial record keeping functions. Duties include dealing with invoices and receipts, preparing initial accounts, paying wages and dealing with expenses claims, and all the other money-related tasks that crop up in a typical organisation. Bookkeepers need to have a head for figures and an eye for detail, as well as an ability to be organised and methodical. It is also desirable to have an interest in finance and other general business issues.

Bookkeeping Jobs Educational Requirements

There are specialised bookkeeping qualifications on offer, such as the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting Skills. Still, many employers will look for 5 GCSEs (A-C), including maths and English, as a starting point, while an A- Level in Business Studies, Economics, Maths, or other similar subject is a definite advantage. Many bookkeepers choose to continue their training after becoming qualified, with the eventual goal of becoming fully eligible for prospective accounting jobs.

Bookkeeping Jobs Market

Bookkeeping jobs are available as part of an in-house accounts team within a company, or at accountants offices who deal with the finances of several clients. Depending on the size of the company, a bookkeeper may be responsible for the entire finance department, preparing accounts to be signed off by a fully qualified accountant, or responsible for just one part of the accounts office operation, and working as part of a team. Experience in finance and accounts departments is very useful in securing a bookkeeping job, and working on temporary agency jobs is a good way of obtaining this experience.

Bookkeeping Jobs Salary Information

Entry-level salaries for a bookkeeper start at around £17,000 per year, rising to £24,000 with experience. Senior accounts clerks with more responsibility can earn £25,000 or more.
