The department

Responsibilities

You will take a lead role on a wide range of corporate transactional and advisory mandates, working with colleagues within Corporate Scotland and elsewhere to deliver a first class client service. In addition you will be accountable for:

  • Building and maintaining client relationships
  • Contributing to business development
  • Coaching and mentoring more junior members of the team
  • Contributing to thought leadership and raising the profile of the firm externally

Purpose of role

Responsibilities
  • To manage the operational aspects of dedicated client legal teams to ensure service excellence, continuous improvements, reporting activities and excellent client relationships
  • Overall management of the Legal Managed Service team including:
    • On-boarding new team members
    • Operational training, coaching and ongoing development of your team
    • Enforce best practice in line with agreed processes
  • Act as a key contact for client queries, as well as preparing for and facilitating regular governance meetings
  • Financial reporting, for example, margin analysis and utilisation tracking

Purpose of role

Our top rated Planning and Public Law team is involved in a range of exciting and high-profile projects.  The work includes new settlements and urban extensions, major regeneration and town centre redevelopment projects, mixed use, retail and residential led schemes, promotion of, and objections to, compulsory purchase orders.  Our lawyers advise on a huge variety of both contentious and non-contentious planning matters.

The client base is impressive and diverse, covering central and local government, leading developers, retailers, investors, corporate vehicles, national representative bodies and local community organisations. 

We now have an opportunity for an Associate to join the Practice, based in Edinburgh. This role is ideal for a 5+ year PQE lawyer, with a track record in planning law and desire to grow their practice.

We are seeking a candidate qualified in Scotland, but with the opportunity and desire to gain dual qualification in English law.

There will be the opportunity (and occasional need) to work from other offices – London and Glasgow in particular.

Responsibilities

The role is varied, with a particular focus on Scottish planning law. You will advise landowners, developers and local planning authorities on all aspects of planning law, including:

  • Complex planning applications and environmental assessment processes
  • Planning agreements/undertakings, highways / roads agreements, stopping up orders and infrastructure agreements
  • Advising on local development plans, local plans, neighbourhood plans and local development orders
  • Review, assessment and drafting of planning policy
  • Garden cities and urban extensions
  • Affordable housing and viability
  • Complex issues presented by major infrastructure and transport projects, and urban development and regeneration schemes
  • Public inquiry and examination work
  • Judicial review
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas
  • Compulsory purchase promotion and objection
  • Development Consent Orders and Transport & Works Act Orders
  • Community infrastructure levy issues / land value capture
  • Planning due diligence on commercial and corporate transactions.

You will be able to communicate clearly with colleagues, clients and the wider market. You will be expected to work independently within a collegiate environment and act as a mentor to more junior members of the team, contributing to growing the practice through networking and marketing. You will develop your skills to make a real contribution in developing the business and the profile of the team.

Technical Skills

  • A strong academic background
  • Knowledge of legal planning and public law experience
  • Experience in advising landowners, developers and local planning authorities on a planning legislation
  • Scottish real estate experience
  • Excellent drafting skills and legal research ability

The department

Our Corporate team in Scotland deals with a wide range of high quality transactional mandates including deals in public and private M&A, private equity, venture capital, equity capital markets and corporate recovery.  Our advisory mandates include restructurings, joint ventures and strategic projects.  Each year we advise on many of Scotland's most significant corporate transactions.  We have a strong client base, including some of Scotland and the UK's leading businesses and a number of regional or global corporates which are either headquartered or have operations in Scotland.  With Dentons' unparalleled international reach our work often involves cross-border aspects and in the last three years our Corporate team in Scotland has worked with colleagues in over 120 offices around the world.  We are also recognised as leaders in sectors such as food and drink, manufacturing, technology, funds and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

You will take a lead role on a wide range of corporate transactional and advisory mandates, working with colleagues within Corporate Scotland and elsewhere to deliver a first class client service. In addition you will be accountable for:
