Animal Jobs Overview
If you’re a lover of animals, then you’ve probably thought about pursuing a career with animals at some point. Indeed, the idea of getting to spend time with animals every day, and earn a living for it, is incredibly appealing for many. Fortunately, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a far-flung fantasy as there is a seemingly endless range of animal jobs out there.
While a veterinarian may be the first career path that springs to mind, there are many, many more. Animal technicians, animal trainers, groomers, zoologists, and animal welfare officers are just a few other options. There are animal jobs to suit all levels of experience and education, each offering completely different types of training and duties.
As you explore agriculture jobs, you may want to delve into specific roles to find out their requirements. You may wish to consider:
Animal Job Qualifications and Skills
As there is such a massive range of animal jobs, the qualifications and skill level can also differ hugely. For example, if you would like to become a vet, you will need to study veterinary medicine at university. This typically takes four to six years, and you will then need to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
However, to become a veterinary nurse, you need to complete an RCVS level three diploma. This usually takes two to three years to complete. Additional animal care roles may require other types of training, and some may even provide training on the job.
Skills-wise, it is of course essential that any animal worker is both passionate and compassionate about animals. They also must be able to work well under pressure and be able to handle the unpredictable nature of animals.
How Much Do Animal Jobs Pay?
Your salary will depend on the advanced nature of the role and the years of experience required. The average vet in the UK earns £34,320 a year, whereas the average animal care worker earns an average of £13,520 a year. Use a salary calculator to help guide your salary expectations as you explore animal jobs.
Update Your CV for Animal Roles
Forget about a bog-standard CV. To really stand out in the animal career field, you’re going to want to add some finesse. Tailor your CV to each job you apply for, as this will no doubt impress the hiring manager.
Articulate your love for animals in your CV and cover letter, but also list any relevant qualifications and experience you may have. Or if you haven’t worked with animals yet, explain how skills at previous roles can be transferred into an animal care setting. To help you out, we have CV templates available, as well as various cover letter examples too.
