Aerospace Engineering Jobs Overview

Aerospace engineers design, build and maintain airframes and their mechanical, electronic and computer systems including navigation and fly-by-wire controls. Some roles involve space satellites and vehicles. Conversely, aerospace engineering jobs for technician typically involve scheduled preventive maintenance and repairs on civil and military service aircraft. Good technicians are able to work with varied workloads; duties may include working with hydraulic and pneumatic components or assemblies. As well as fixed-wing airframes, some posts specialise in rotary wing engineering, i.e. helicopters. Additionally, there may be some involvement with weapons systems in military jobs involving military aircraft.

Aerospace Engineering Jobs Education Requirements

Excellent maths and problem-solving skills are required, along with a methodical approach. Aerospace engineering job typically require an HND (Higher National Diploma) minimum, or degree level education in an avionics engineering subject. At technician level, good examination results in science, maths and IT should support vocational qualifications; a BTEC certificate course in avionics and aerospace engineering is one example. These NVQ courses teach key knowledge areas of aircraft systems and aerodynamic principles, along with some necessary practical skills. Alternatively, technician apprentice positions offer a good career foundation with aircraft manufacturers, airline operators and service engineering contractors. Military career options are a further possibility.

Aerospace Engineering Jobs Market

Applicants for aerospace engineering jobs are currently in considerable demand, with advertisements for roles in varied locations - from Derby to Bristol in the west, or Chelmsford to London and the south-east. There are also some openings for graduate engineer jobs. Current technician engineers who are looking for a role change may wish to consider airframe controls or mechanical design engineering positions.

Aerospace Engineering Jobs Salary Information

Depending on location, technician jobs in aerospace engineering offer national average starting salaries from £20,277 to £30,433, with a median figure of £24,851. At aerospace engineer level, annual pay rates range between £27,681 and £43,121; midrange remuneration is £34,241 p.a.
