Wirral Overview

Bordering the outskirts of Chester and the River Dee, the south-eastern part of the Wirral is generally affluent and prosperous, having always been part of the county of Cheshire. The peninsula has twenty-five miles of coastline, with the northern part more heavily urbanised and now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Merseyside. Here, good road and rail tunnel connections from Wallasey and Birkenhead mean that some residential areas have become dormitory suburbs of Liverpool, where there is a wider choice of jobs for professionals. Wirral's growing economy includes forestry, energy, construction and jobs in the financial sector as well as some tourism in New Brighton, West Kirby and the more upmarket Hoylake.

Wirral Job Opportunities

Hotels, garden centres and shopping near the picturesque village of Burton and in Neston, Heswall and other towns offer some employment, as well as businesses on a number of industrial estates. The hospitals at Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge are situated quite centrally in the peninsula and are significant employers. The town of Birkenhead and Wirral Borough Council also provide employment – especially administrative, healthcare jobs, cleaning, education and support posts. Other Wirral jobs include finance, data and business systems analysis, data entry, laboratory technicians, accounting, health and safety, quality control and scientific posts as well as customer service.

Wirral Employment Trends

A pioneering major dock regeneration project based on former shipbuilding yard sites looks set to provide major employment opportunities. Wirral Waters is part of Peel Holdings and over 20,000 jobs likely to be created in the short to medium term, capitalising on the area's excellent motorway connections. This is seen as part of the recent 'Northern Powerhouse' governmental initiative. The new centre will span some 500 acres and shape the future, providing commerce with an area to grow and flourish. It is envisaged that over a thousand domestic and international automotive, aerospace, film and energy businesses (amongst others) will exhibit, sell and distribute here.
